Explaining the Conclusion of "Never Have I Ever" Season 4

After four seasons on the air, Never Have I Ever has come to an end. This fun teen comedy by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher premiered in 2020 and introduced viewers to Devi Vishwakumar, an ambitious teen who is reeling from the sudden death of her father at the start of her high school career. Last Thursday, Season 4 of "Never Have I Ever" premiered on Netflix, and in 10 episodes, we saw how much Devi has grown from an angry, chaotic sophomore to a thoughtful, slightly less chaotic senior facing the final stretch of her childhood, with the help of her loving family and loyal best friends He reminded fans of how much he had grown into a not-so-fourth grader.

Like the best teen dramas, Devi has also battled an epic love triangle over the past four seasons. After breaking up with the uber-popular Paxton Hall-Joshida and sleeping with her nemesis-turned-love interest Ben Gross (plus a quick fling with her newly good-looking classmate Ethan), Devi finally tied the knot with the love of her young life in the final episode of the series, a great college. Now, who will Devi be tied to? Read on for a breakdown of the final episode of Never Have I Ever (and what the last "so far" means).

Devi's college search has not been going well this season. She told her father she wanted to be a princess when she was little, and he told her about a place called Princeton University. (During the season, Devi was deferred for admission and eventually placed on the waiting list.

In the final episode, Devi gets the opportunity to write her final essay for admission consideration. The admissions advisor at Princeton implies that he should write something personal, explaining why he must go to that school. Devi hesitates, but eventually Ben, of all people, pushes her to write a heartfelt essay explaining why attending Princeton would honor her father and herself. Then, at the beginning of the series finale, Devi receives the news that she will be attending Princeton in the fall.

The finale begins on the last day of her senior year and, surprisingly, fast-forwards to graduation and the summer after (although we learn that Devi is valedictorian and Ben is valedictorian). Devi spends the entire summer with Fabiola, who has enrolled in the robotics program at Howard University, and Eleanor, who graduated early to launch her acting career. Devi's last weekend in Sherman Oaks coincides with her grandmother's wedding. When Devi, Fabiola, and Eleanor's last night together seems to end too soon, Nirmala invites all of Devi's friends to the wedding.

During the summer, Devi stalls packing for college. Although excited to go to the school of her dreams, the teen is understandably nervous about moving across the country so far away from her family (although she becomes friends with Kamala, who has moved to Baltimore for a job at Johns Hopkins). This coincides with Devi's mother, Nalini, who is very stressed both in preparation for flying to Princeton with Devi the day after the wedding and in hosting the entire wedding in her backyard. During the reception, Nalini snaps at her daughter when she realizes that Devi has not packed yet, and her mother-in-law reminds her that this is not only Devi's last weekend at home, but also Nalini's last weekend with her daughter.

Finally, when Nalini comes to help Devi pack, mother and daughter have a very sweet moment. They went from grieving Mohan's death and not understanding each other's actions to bonding so tightly that Devi helped Nalini and her new boyfriend get together. Part of the loneliness of leaving "Never Have I Ever" is leaving one of the best mother-daughter dramas on television.

Now, we mentioned above that Nirmala invited Devi's friends to the wedding. Unfortunately, Ben was not among them. He was not included because he had gone to New York City early, before entering Columbia University, and spent the summer before college as an intern at a law firm. By the end of the school year, Devi and Ben had become quite close to each other, but neither had told the other how they felt. According to John McEnroe's narration, Devi and Ben did not text that much during the summer, but the night before their wedding, she couldn't help but text him a picture of an old mock UN placard from season one.

In the providence of teen programming, the email arrived the night Ben was out clubbing with his fellow interns (let's call it teen programming logic). When Ben advises one of the guys to confess to a girl that he likes her, the guy asks if Ben has ever confessed to him himself, and Ben realizes that he has never confessed to Devi. His super romantic solution is to go back to Sherman Oaks from New York for the wedding (...) and there he shows up with a surprise and finally tells Devi that he loves her. The two run off into the city at night and finally discuss the misunderstanding that occurred after they slept together for the first time - basically they both thought the other had brushed them off and then avoided each other. In the show, Devi goes to school in New Jersey and chooses the right guy for her, Ben Gross, and he is just across the river.

Some breaking news about the Sherman Oaks squad as a post-wedding montage shows where everyone ends up: fab and Gears Brosnan are in love with Howard, and Eleanor and Trent are somehow after Eleanor wants to be a director. (...) They work together in LA. Nalini is still happily dating Margot's father, Andres, and Kamala's boyfriend, Manish, moves with her to Baltimore. As for Paxton, after dropping out of Arizona State University and returning to Sherman Oaks to work at his high school, the former athlete spent a season of soul-searching. While he and Devi agreed to work things out as friends, Paxton decided to re-enroll at ASU to pursue a degree in education and eventually become a teacher. He also begins dating Lindsey, a cute substitute teacher at Sherman Oaks High School. This brings "Never Have I Ever" to a close, and McEnroe left us with the words, "For now. For now."

Despite these cryptic last words, there is no "Never Have I Ever" Season 5. Kaling and Fisher confirmed that Season 4 was the final season since the announcement, and the show happily concluded all storylines with the graduation of the younger cast members. While we would like to believe that "for now" means that Devi will make a cameo appearance on Cumming's Max show "The Sex Lives of College Girls," the cast themselves have said that the phrase is just a reminder that the characters are still growing and learning as they continue their college lives off camera They explain to Tudum that it only indicates that they are still growing and learning as they continue their college lives off-camera.

"'For now' means, for me, that this is just a moment in time, as the roller coaster ride of life continues," says Maitrey Ramakrishnan. 'Devi is still a work in progress. It is clear that this is just one of many chapters in a young woman's life, and a very exciting one at that. Life goes on and you never know what will happen. Whatever happens with her relationship with Ben, and whether she becomes the first Supreme Court justice who is also a hip-hop artist, I wish her the best.
