Henry Cavill Explains Why He Dropped 'The Witcher'

Last Thursday, Netflix released the three-episode second part of "The Witcher" Season 3. After the reveal of the villainous role of Wirgeforz, a major focus of "The Witcher" Season 3 Part 2 was to close out Henry Cavill's time on the show.

There were many questions about how the show would go forward without its biggest star, and the show's creative team promised a grand send-off to the actor, who had lobbied for his role before the show was written. For those wondering how the series set up the casting change (or the casual viewer who didn't even know to say goodbye to this version of Geralt), here is what we know about Cavill leaving The Witcher.

Netflix confirmed that The Witcher will return in October 2022 for Season 4 with Liam Hemsworth playing Geralt, and both Cavill and Hemsworth shared statements about the casting on Instagram.

"My journey as Geralt of Livia has been filled with both monsters and adventure, but unfortunately, I will be putting down the medallion and sword for season 4," Cavill wrote. In my place, the fantastic Liam Hemsworth will take up the mantle of White Wolf." As with any great literary character, I pass the baton with respect for the time spent embodying Geralt and with enthusiasm for Liam's portrayal of this most fascinating and nuanced character. Liam, there is a wonderful depth to this character.

Earlier the same week, Cavill announced that he would be returning to the DC film world as Superman after appearing in the post credits of Black Adam. Two months later, however, it was announced that "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn would be the new co-CEO of DC Studios, and the company opted to reboot Superman rather than bring Cavill back (the new Clark Kent is "The Politician" 's David Corenswett). After this news, Netflix confirmed that Cavill will leave The Witcher in the Season 3 finale.

Gerard, Jenefer, and Siri will not be reunited before the end of the two-part season. During the final scene, the Witcher appears only through narration, reciting a letter that Yennefer wrote to Gellert, promising that he will find Siri and that she will make the world safe for Siri's return. Siri's final sequence features a great battle scene that makes you want to say aloud, "Give these children their own show," as the princess is rescued from captivity by a band of warriors called the Rats, who then carry out their first kill. In the final scene of the season, Siri introduces herself as Farka. Farka is the name of a witch Siri met in the desert and is well known to book fans as "a near-mythical representative of brutal revenge," according to Polygon magazine. Basically, Siri's new moniker hints at her dark path ahead, as the descendants of Farka are destined to bring about the destruction of the world.

Cavill's final scene as Gerardt is a run-of-the-mill hero moment, if not the final scene of a beloved lead actor. Before he has fully recovered from his battle with the Virgeforz, the impatient Witcher leaves the forest of Brokiron in search of Siri. At a checkpoint where a cocky Nilfgaardian guard takes a bribe from a traveler and threatens to make the girl an orphan, Geralt first accepts the bribe.

Archer Milva is a new character we meet in Part 2, who appears at the end and joins Geralt and Jascua on their journey to find Siri. Along the way, Geralt tells Nilfgaard's emperor (and Siri's real father) Emhil that no tyrant's wall or army will stop Geralt from freeing Siri. And with this absolute non-ending, "The Witcher" says goodbye to Cavil and sets up an epic fourth season in which Geralt suddenly has a new face.

For a while before Season 3 Part 2 was released, fans thought "The Witcher" would have Hemsworth play an entirely new character, such as a new Witcher who vows to protect Siri after Geralt's death. In May, however, showrunner Lauren Hisrich confirmed that the show would continue with the lead role.

"It's time for him to take the next step in his life," Hisrich said of Cavill's departure. 'I think we've all lamented this in our own way,' he said. We had the option to drop Geralt and end the program. [But] that's not what we wanted to do. Because there are too many stories left to tell."

"If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher," she continued, "we would be leaving the book entirely, and I don't think that's what anyone would have wanted.

After the Season 3, Part 2 finale, fans will have to wait and see what the series has in store for the main character. If spirited book fans want to start speculating about how the show will take this casting change, executive producer Tomek Baginski told Yahoo. News UK that the show's creative team will bring Hemsworth's Geralt into the fold, "and we're going to do it. very, very good plan," he said.

"I'm not going to get too deep into that idea because this would be a big spoiler, (but) it's also very, very close to the meta idea that is deeply embedded in the books, especially volume 5," he told the outlet. 'It's very accurate lore. It's very close to what's in the book, and I think this change would be very perfect. But at the same time it will be a new Geralt, a new face for this character, and I think it will also be very, very exciting."
