Aidan's Grand Return in "And So On...", Commentary Aidan's Grand Return, Commentary in
Last year, Carrie Bradshaw returned to the small screen with "And So It Goes," premiering in December 2021. Fans who grew up with Carrie, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York (with the notable absence of Samantha Jones) welcomed the series with open arms, but some developments in the characters' lives were controversial at best. From Big's heart attack death in the series premiere to Miranda and Steve's acrimonious breakup, not to mention Che Diaz, longtime viewers have watched as the central dynamics of the original series have been forever tested and transformed.
In the second season of "And Then There Was My Father," however, two iconic characters from the original, Kim Cattrall as Samantha and John Corbett as Aiden Shaw, finally return. First up is Aidan, Carrie's former fiancée and one half of the eternal Aidan vs. Big argument.
Aidan reappears at Carrie's house, not in a surprise encounter, but after he comes up in conversation about his ex-lover at dinner. Carrie is keeping tabs on him; he now lives in Virginia and apparently divorced his wife five years ago and sold his furniture company to West Elm. Carrie and Aidan had not spoken for a long time, but she began to think about contacting him, and that night at home she sent him a message, "Hey Stranger." But she did not send it.
It took the rest of the episode for Carrie to get up the courage to press send, and it's a tumultuous episode, including walking through a snowstorm to do a reading at Widowcon (yes, the event is a book club, as its name suggests). But in the end, she was back in front of the computer. She narrates, "And just like that, I realized that some relationships should stay in the past, and some shouldn't," she says, sending a digital note.
In episode 7, she spends some time with Aidan, and Carrie reveals early on that the two had a Valentine's Day dinner engagement. Of course, love never runs smoothly in "SATC," and Carrie is forced to wait 30 minutes at the restaurant. Carrie fears that she has been stood up, but it turns out that she was waiting at the wrong restaurant, next door to the one they had chosen (the two buildings are admittedly designed to be confusing). She walks out and turns around to see Aidan there in a very tight belted leather coat.
(Side note: The coat shouldn't matter, but for those familiar with John Corbett's roles in the "To All the Boys" series and "XO, Kitty," he appeared as a completely different character than he did in his first actual appearance as Aidan in 13 years. It is disconcerting to realize that he was dressed more like Aidan when he first appeared in the film. (You don't believe me, do you?)
Once seated at the right restaurant, Aidan takes off his jacket to reveal a cozy knit button-down and mourns John (Big, if anyone is still confused about using his real name). He has also read her book, but Carrie assures him that time has healed him. They are both single, neither intends to stand up to the other, and it's a nice little moment. She invites him to her house, and he is surprised to find her living in the same apartment, a sort of time travel scene. It's also where their engagement ended, and he naturally can't go back there to feel the ghost of that lost love.
"We were in the restaurant, and I thought, how wonderful... We were back where we started," he admits. 'But this is where we ended up. With the fucking walls we couldn't break through, with the floor... We started over. I'm never going back there again," he added.
Aidan and Carrie's 2.0 (technically 3.0) never actually seems to happen, Carrie says she understands, and he starts to walk away. But then Aidan turns around and points out that New York is a city of hotels. They finally kiss, and Carrie says in voiceover, " And just like that, Aidan and I are back on the same page".
After the dreamy reunion of Carrie and Aidan's shippers, the episode 8 teaser shows that the two have made up completely. All we see in this short clip is the two beats kissing in bed and Aidan laughing with Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte at a group dinner, and it looks like we will see at least a few episodes of fun times between the couple before the season ends. (Season 2 has 11 episodes, so there are four more to go.) There is also a scene where Miranda is wondering if Carrie and Aidan should slowly get together. After much drama, we will find out in the rest of the season if this couple will actually get together.
