Serena Williams' Win Beauty Is Not Your Typical Celebrity Brand

Serena Williams' Win Beauty Is Not Your Typical Celebrity Brand

You would never guess that I would meet Serena Williams and talk to her about her debut makeup collection, Win Beauty. But there I was, standing in front of the 39-time tennis champion, dripping water as if I had been on a log flume three times in a row. My shoes, tote bag, and dress were soaked, and water dripped down my back from my low bun. But a quick glance at the front camera revealed that my mascara (Wynn Beauty tube formula) had not smudged one bit.

My entrance was chaotic, which underscored why Williams entered the crowded celebrity beauty space in the first place. After her retirement, she told me that she lacked a beauty routine that made her feel connected to her off-court, off-line life.

"I love being glamorous, I love the red carpet, I love the Met Gala. But what I really want is to just go about my day." But what I really want is to just go about my day.

Five years in development, delayed by the Covid-19 craze, and 40 products edited down to 10, Wynn Beauty's "makeup that moves" was born, from a lightweight foundation with SPF to a buttery lip serum to a buildable concealer, in 91 colors, intended to provide flexible, 24/7 coverage along with a hint of hydration.

When Williams talks about women who need long-lasting makeup that can withstand work, working out, childcare, and even unpredictable weather, she includes herself. 'I am not better than anyone else,' she says.

"I feel that this make-up is relevant to all of us, those of us who live regular lives."

With the entire collection arriving on Ulta's shelves today, I asked three more Marie Claire editors to see which of Wynn's products would hold up in the hustle and bustle of our actual routines. We arrived at nine title-worthy picks that are new additions to our daily lineup, rain or shine. Read on for our honest review.

"I've never worn a huge lipstick, but I'm now making an exception for WYN Beauty's Say-Everything Max Intensity Featherweight Lipstick. I tried it in two shades: a vibrant candy apple red pigmented " Spark," and "Thing," a muted shade of nude pink. Both shades had a satin finish and surprisingly lasted for hours, even while eating dinner and drinking tea. At one point, I even forgot I was wearing lipstick. Above all, my favorite part is the moisturizing, creamy texture. I didn't feel any of the dryness that often comes after applying lipstick (which is why I usually stick to chapstick or gloss). That said, I'm happy to report that both shades have earned a prime spot in my beauty cabinet."

"Last summer, on a beauty-searching expedition to Italy, I discovered that lip serum is one of the country's signature beauty products. It is moisturizing and nourishing and can be layered on top of each other, which is not the case with American-made products. Since then, I have been searching for a good lip serum in the U.S., so I was overjoyed when I learned that Wynn was embracing this category.

"Knowing Selina's affinity for Win, I figured the No Words Needed Lip Serum would be top-of-the-line. A swipe of the pale pink serum proved my hypothesis. The formula, with jojoba oil and mango butter, had a silky yet surprisingly thin texture. It instantly softened my lips and left them looking very delicate and healthy.

"The finish is exactly what I got with Wynn's Featuring You Hydrating Skin Enhancing Tint, which seems to be the theme of this range. It's incredibly lightweight and SPF 30. It's a more natural finish, but I wanted it to look quite glossy, so I applied a very creamy sunscreen underneath for added dewiness (and protection). It is worth noting, however, that the tint covered my chin breakout decently and worked well with the blush and bronzer, which is a mixture of powder and cream. It also stayed moisturized for hours, which is exactly what I'll be using as a summer staple. Well, that and the fact that I'm a huge Selena fan. Win-win."

"I tried two shades of Win Beauty's matte lipstick, "Recite" and "Brave"; "Recite" is a deep mauve color that matches the dark, nostalgic lipstick I usually prefer to wear. However, when I'm as pale as I am now (it's been a long winter), these deep colors can wash me out. This shade didn't do that, it complimented my medium skin and worked well with any eye makeup, from neutrals to heavily contoured glittery lids.

"'Brave' also gave me a pleasant surprise: such a bright pink doesn't always show up on my already pink lips, but this was pigmented enough to make a difference. In addition, neither lipstick provided the no-badge effect of a matte full coverage and matte liquid lipstick, but did not dehydrate the lips. (The formula was smooth, creamy, and light enough to forget you're wearing it.

"My passport renewal appointment started at 6:30 AM and ended at 9:00 PM at a Bridal Fashion Week event. I had a couple of things on my face that I didn't want to put on: hydrating skin tint, Big Vision Tubing mascara, and Guideline Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. I didn't end up reapplying it, but that wasn't because I had a full schedule.

"I started with foundation. My skin is naturally oily and acne prone, so I kept to a single layer of foundation. The formula was light and breathable and blended easily with my fingers. No foundation, no matter how thick, could keep my skin matte for more than 12 hours, but at the end of the day I did notice a tiny bit of shine on my nose.

"Liquid eyeliner glided over my upper lids in an even line. And thanks to the torrential downpour throughout the day, I saw its water-proof properties in action. My personal MVP of the trio, however, is the mascara. I can call it the best tube mascara I've ever tried. I could feel the feathery length and defined finish with just two swipes to the left and right. Rain, wind, and rushing currents throughout Manhattan were worthy opponents for this long-lasting mascara. Celina said the product was formulated to be long-lasting.
