Will there be a "Baby Reindeer" Season 2?

Netflix's latest hit, "Baby Reindeer," a true-life drama from creator, writer, and star Richard Gadd, is based on a harrowing true story. Scottish comedian Richard Gadd was stalked and harassed by a woman who sent him over 40,000 emails when he was in his 20s. Gadd turned this touching saga into a brilliant seven-episode miniseries in which he played his fictional self, Donnie Dunn, and Jessica Gunning played his stalker, Martha.

"Baby Reindeer," which appeared with little fanfare on April 11 at the streaming giant, was critically acclaimed and, according to Variety, received 1.4 million views in its first week of release, making it a The film was a surprise hit for streaming platforms. But there is a big reason why Donnie and Martha's story is not on screen.

The ending of "Baby Reindeer" provides a major reason why the series will likely not return for a second season. After Donnie attends the trial where Martha pleads guilty, his narration reveals that the trial was the last time we saw Martha. This is a very definitive end to this chapter in Donnie's life, and Gad also suggests that his ordeal with the real Martha had a similar ending.

In an interview with the Times on April 11, Gadd spoke briefly about the situation with the stalker, saying, "It was resolved. I had mixed feelings. I didn't want to throw someone that emotionally disturbed into jail."

Of course, official information on whether the series will be renewed can only come from Netflix and Gad himself. As of this writing, neither Netflix nor the creators have mentioned the possibility of a "Baby Reindeer" season 2.

However, the seven-episode show was originally billed as a Netflix limited series, and according to Deadline, it is slated to be submitted to compete for the Limited Series or Anthology Series or Film category at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

Meanwhile, Gad is already working on a new project: according to Screen Scotland, he will work as creator and screenwriter on a six-part original drama, currently titled Lions, which has been approved by the BBC

Official description.

The official description says: When Niall's estranged "brother" Reuben shows up at his wedding, it causes explosive violence, and we are taken back through their lives... In this ambitious series, which spans nearly 40 years from the 1980s to the present day, the brothers meet as teens and to their adult differences, it covers the peaks and valleys of the siblings' relationship.

The synopsis teases that the upcoming series will "capture the wild energy of a changing city" and address the question of "what it means to be a man."

Before "Baby Reindeer" became a miniseries and a sleeper hit on Netflix, the film first took shape as a one-man show written and performed by Gad.

Since its debut, the real-life series has been compared to another British production, Fleabag, which began as a one-man show. A recording of the theatrical version of Fleabag was released in cinemas in 2019, followed by the second and final season of the comedy on prime video in 2019, and again in cinemas in 2023.

Nothing official has been announced, but footage of a stage production of Baby Reindeer exists and may be available for a special limited release. So far, the Olivier Award-winning stage production has not been streamed, but the script book of Baby Reindeer is available for purchase.
