Read MoreBindi Irwin opened up about her decision to go public with her endometriosis diagnosis and how it helped her push through her fear of going public with her personal story.
On Friday, May 3, Irwin attended EndoFound's 12th Annual Blossom Ball at Gotham Hall in New York City with her brother Robert and mother Terry.
The event raises funds for endometriosis (a disease in which tissue resembling the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, resulting in severe pelvic pain, according to the World Health Organization) and provides education, outreach, and research in hopes of one day finding a cure.
Irwin was the first international public figure to receive the 2024 End Found Blossom Award at the event, People reported in February. Other recipients include singer Halsey and actors Lena Dunham and Fran Drescher.
While walking the red carpet, Irwin opened up to People in an exclusive interview about her personal decision to share what she called a "painful" journey.
"Deciding whether or not to tell my story was pretty difficult," she said. Talking about endometriosis is challenging because it's the most personal thing you can get."
The conservationist went on to say that telling her story meant publicly discussing "every little health detail," including "fertility issues, IBS symptoms, fatigue, and the nausea and pain associated with endometriosis."
"And my fear," she continued, "was that I didn't know what would happen when I stepped into the world of sharing my journey. In March 2023, Irwin posted a candid photo of herself in the hospital, announcing her diagnosis and treatment for endometriosis."
"I wondered for a long time if I should share this journey with you in such a public forum," she wrote in the caption. I began to feel a responsibility to share my story for the sake of other women who needed help."
At the time, Irwin explained in her caption that for 10 years she had "struggled with insurmountable fatigue, pain, and nausea," while simultaneously "trying to remain a positive person and hide my pain."
"Doctors told me it was something I would simply deal with as a woman, and I gave up completely, trying to function through the pain," she continued.
"I had no answers until my friend @lesliemosier showed me the way to get my life back. I decided to have surgery for my endometriosis. I was scared to have the surgery, but I knew I couldn't live with what I had. The pain seemed to be tearing every part of my life apart."Irwin then revealed that during the surgery the doctors found "37 lesions - some very deep and difficult to remove - and chocolate cysts," adding that the first words her doctor said to her during her recovery were: "How have you lived through so much pain? How could you live with so much pain?"
"The validation for the pain over the years is beyond description," she added.
Irwin's brother, Robert, called his sister to People, "one of the bravest people I know."
"When you finally started to find those answers, it meant so much to all of us to have the Bindi we knew back in action as the most determined, graceful person even under pressure," he said at the time.
"The discussion about endometriosis is something that hasn't been widely talked about, especially in Australia.
"So we all need to have these really important conversations and bring this into the mainstream and help a lot of other women who are going through this because there are a lot of women who don't know what's going on," Robert added.
