Today, Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry live in California and rarely spend time with her father-in-law, Prince Charles. (However, leading up to her royal wedding to Harry six years ago this month, then-Prince Charles and Meghan had a warm relationship, and she and Harry produced a six-part Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, on May 19, 2018, in Windsor. He recalls the moment he asked his soon-to-be father-in-law to walk him halfway down the aisle when they were getting married. (Meghan's estranged father, Thomas Markle, was not present at the wedding, but her mother, Doria Ragland, was, and the mother-daughter duo have a very tight bond.)

In episode 4 of the series, directed by Liz Garbus, Meghan said of Charles, "Harry's father is Very charming. So I asked him to walk me down the aisle as my father-in-law and he said yes."

When footage of Charles and Meghan walking together was shown, Meghan said, "Everything was surreal. At that moment, I could even see Harry's nickname, 'H.'"

Meghan made the decision to walk herself halfway down the aisle at St. George's Chapel, where she was met by Prince Charles. It was the first time a royal bride had walked down the wedding aisle by herself," the Mirror reported.

On the eve of Harry and Meghan's wedding, Buckingham Palace announced that Meghan had asked Prince Charles to accompany her, and according to a statement released at the time, the then-Prince said, "I am delighted to welcome Ms. Markle into the Royal Family in this way." (Prince Charles did not have a daughter of his own, so this was no doubt an emotional moment for everyone.)

Harry himself, in the documentary Prince, Son, and Heir, talks about his father's role in his own wedding: "I think he knew this was going to happen when I asked him, and he immediately said, 'Of course, Meghan, whatever you need. I'll do whatever it takes. ' He's our father, so of course he'll be there for us."

Charles' contributions to the 2018 royal wedding didn't stop there. Harry said, "My dad helped me pick the orchestra, which made all the difference." Charles also had a hand in selecting the Kingdom Choir, a gospel choir famous for singing "Stand By Me." There was a lot of help from my father on that one," Harry said. That evening, Charles hosted an evening reception for the couple at the Frogmore House, where he gave a moving speech that "brought the audience to tears" at the party, the Mirror wrote. He called Harry "dear old Harry" and was apparently deeply moved by the marriage of his youngest son, whom he still clearly remembers as a baby.
