Read MoreDaniel Radcliffe, who has publicly criticized Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling's transphobic views on several occasions, further addressed the issue in a new Atlantic magazine profile interview.
"Ultimately, it makes me really sad. Because the people I met, the times we met, the books she wrote, the world she created, all of that is something I can relate to very deeply," Radcliffe told the magazine.
When some of Rowling's anti-trans remarks made headlines around 2020, Radcliffe issued a statement through The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ suicide prevention organization he supports. In that statement, he emphasized his support for the transgender community and expressed his hope that LGBTQ+ people who found solace in the "Harry Potter" series would continue to have that solace despite the author's personal views.
"I worked on The Trevor Project for 12 years, so to not say anything, I don't know, would have seemed awfully cowardly," the actor explained to The Atlantic.
"I wanted to help people who were adversely affected by the comments. And I wanted to say that if that was Joe's opinion, it wasn't the opinion of everyone involved in the Potter franchise."
Radcliffe's Harry Potter co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint also condemned Rowling's comments at the time, and as expected, comments came from both sides of the "debate."
"People have been wanting to write a version of 'Are these three kids ungrateful brats?' for a long time, and I finally did. So I'm glad," Radcliffe commented.
"Joe, Harry Potter obviously wouldn't have been born without her. But that doesn't mean that I will forever owe what I truly believe to be true to someone else."
Asked about Rowling's comment on social media that Radcliffe could not "apologize" to her because she was "in favor" of the trans rights movement, the actor told The Atlantic, "I continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people and no more I have no comment," he replied.
On Twitter, people praised Radcliffe for standing up for his beliefs.
"Daniel Radcliffe has our childhood crush!" one wrote.
"Daniel Radcliffe continues to be a wonderful human being and we are grateful to him," someone said.
"We admire Radcliffe for standing up for what he believes in. No drama needed," commented another.
