Meryl Streep thought that in 1989, when she was about to turn 40, her "career was over

The iconic actress Meryl Streep was not entirely sure she would have an acting career after she turned 40.

On the opening night of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Streep accepted the honorary Palme d'Or Award and reflected on some of the horrors she had been thinking about her future in the entertainment industry in 1989 at the age of 39.

"Thirty-five years ago, when I was here for the first time, I was already a mother of three. I was about to be 40 and I thought my career was over," said Streep, who turned 74, as people reported. And that was not an unrealistic expectation for the actress at the time.

"I am so grateful that you are not disgusted with my face, that you are not getting off the train," she continued. My mother, who was usually right about everything, told me: "Meryl, darling, you will see it all goes so fast." So fast."And it is not.

In 1989, Streep won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in the 1988 film "Angel of Evil".

May 15, during a panel discussion, Streep said that her 1989 Cannes Film Festival experience and her life in the public eye as a result of her success rapidly changed

"They said: "You will need nine bodyguards.""I said: "I don't even need a bodyguard. Believe me, I don't need 1. I have no bodyguard...I don't have bodyguards," she said at the time. "In the old days, I do not know, there was no same security, so the first time I came here needed maybe a dozen.

"It was crazy," she continued. "I hardly recovered from it. I went to the hotel room and I couldn't believe how wild it was.

Streep continued to say that a lot has changed in 35 years, recalling that she was a 39-year-old mom at the time and was already a 2-time Oscar winner."

"That is, you have to realize, I was afraid," she explained. "Physically, I'm not a rock star because I don't know."
