Ambika Mod has accused "pressure" on female characters like "one day" Emma Morley of being "sweet and likeable
Ambika Mod is pleased to have been able to portray Emma Morley one day as something other than "sweet and likeable."
Speaking with Vogue India in a new interview, the British actress shared that she and the creators of the series were delighted that they chose not to "dumb down" Emma's character.
"There's so much pressure to make female protagonists sweet and likeable on romcom," the Mod said. "I've seen quite a bit of criticism for Emma, so I think we're still expecting our female characters to be in a certain way.
The actress rose to fame in the past few months as she starred as Emma in the TV adaptation of "One Day on Netflix," along with White Lotus "Leo Woodall" as Dexter "Dex" Mayhew. The story was originally a novel by David Nicholls, which in 2011 became a somewhat divisive film starring Anne Hathaway.
Previously, Mod was a stage actress and also starred as Schulty in the 2022 miniseries This Is Going to Hurt.
The Vogue interview is not the first time the actress has shared how she has been influenced by criticism of Emma Morley, who is an opinionated and often cynical character.
"Women will be misunderstood. Whatever you do," she told Glamour on May 3. "You can make the sweetest and nicest manic Pixie Dreamgirl character out there, and people will still hate her."
" She said at the time, "We don't give female characters or women in general just the same respect as male characters.
"Especially in this situation, if there are two characters that are completely equal and one gets more love than the other, you kind of look at society a bit and see why it's happening and why not talk more about it?
A few questions to ponder over the weekend!
