Almost 5 years after a heartbreaking "not really OK" interview in Africa, Meghan Markle says "We're really happy" during a tour of Nigeria
Meghan Markle provided a heartwarming update on how she, Prince Harry and their children are now 4 years after exchanging royal life in Southern California for a private existence.
"We're just doing great things," the Duchess of Sussex told people during a couple who recently visited Nigeria in West Africa for 3 days. "And I'm happy to see our family grow and evolve. Of course, I am happy. We are really happy."
The Duchess's words are even more poignant when compared to the last time she was making an official visit to Africa in 2019.
At the time, she and the Duke were still working royalty, but Harry was supposed to visit Solo in Malawi, Angola and Botswana, and took their baby son Archie to South Africa together.
Back in 2019, when Meghan admitted to journalist Tom Bradby on camera that she was "not really okay" as she tried to balance royal duties with the new mom and newlyweds.
Of course, about 18 months later, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021-3, you'll hear more about how difficult it is for her to find royal life when she and Harry admit they felt suicidal before stepping down from royal duties.
Sussex's recent visit to Nigeria was reminiscent of the Royal Tour in that it was packed into many official engagements with local leaders and organisations, but this time it felt different in tone, as it was visiting as a civilian (though with great influence).
"These trips are about us being able to go outside and focus on things that are very meaningful to us," Prince Harry told people. "And for us, being able to be on the ground is what it's all about.
Meghan said, "It really makes sense. Just be able to connect with people...That's what makes it special.
Harry also highlighted how important this particular trip is to him on an emotional level. "You know what Africa means to me over the years," he said. "It's a very special place and I'm very happy to be able to include Nigeria now (in the Invictus game)."
