Kate Hudson took a cold turkey break from a man in her thirties, and it turned out to be one of the best things she ever did.

"I took a year off," Hudson shared during a recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper.

"I was in a place where I thought, 'I don't want to repeat the pattern anymore,'" she explained. "I can help you, but you have to do it.

To make this work, she had to stop flirting, texting men or giving them her number—

"In the first few months, it was giving me a strange power, because it became very uncomfortable for me," Hudson said.

"Since we were undergoing different specific types of treatment, it was really about understanding the specific things that were going on with me. And I had this kind of breakthrough that was very emotional that I don't think I would have been able to access if I had any distractions. So it allowed me to see things much more clearly.

Around the six-month mark, Hudson no longer felt very interested in her phone, or in cheating.

And around the year mark, the actress forgot how when her therapist gave her the go-ahead to flirt again. When the men started texting her again, "I didn't have the same attachment to it anymore," she explained. "It just went away. ... It did not have the same, like, pull.

After this experience, she also began to be attracted to a different kind of men than before, during which time she was very happy to be single for more than three years.

"If I hadn't done that, I wouldn't have ended up with Danny [Fujikawa, her fiance]," she said.

"Danny is a very good person, so I don't know if I was attracted to a good person. I mean, I was attracted to good men, but, as you know, the simple kind — I liked the spirited, wild type — Danny has it in him, but his values are very sturdy, he's a very nice person, and I didn't take those 3 years of being so happy in my life alone. If so, I would never have allowed it.
