Charles Spencer and his wife Karen Spencer have divorced after nearly 13 years of marriage.

The 9th Earl Spencer confirmed that he had divorced Countess Spencer on Saturday, 6 May 9, telling the Daily Mail that the split was "very sad"

"I just want to devote myself to all my children and grandchildren," Spencer told the publication at the time. "And I wish Karen all happiness in the future.

According to the publication, the pair broke the news of their impending divorce to staff at Althorp, the Spencer family estate in Northamptonshire, on May 3. The same report claims that Spencer's relationship with the Countess began to crumble "amid the tension of writing a harrowing memoir detailing the physical and sexual abuse he suffered at boarding school."

The Daily Mail reports that Spencer told staff that "five years of work on his memoirs" had a significant impact on him and that he was "undergoing residential treatment for trauma at the end of last year."

In the book, Spencer details the discovery of a diary he kept as a young boy in 1976, It detailed the alleged sexual abuse he claims to have endured by assistant Matron at his childhood boarding school.

"Karen has been supportive," he told the publication at the time. "I think it was very difficult for her to have a husband to go through what was essentially four and a half years of the most profound treatment with very difficult undertones to it. And she supported the idea that I was doing it.

"I think she always wanted me to be happier and healthier," he added. "And it seems very likely. So, while I'm going through this, I'm grateful that she's standing by me, what I've now noticed was an essential process.
