Kate Winslet says her kiss with Leonardo DiCaprio in the famous "I'm Flying" scene from "Titanic" was actually a "nightmare."
The on-screen chemistry between "Titanic" co-stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the factors that made the 1997 film one of the most profitable in movie history, but according to Winslet, one of Hollywood's hottest stars at the time Kissing a man who is arguably one of the hottest stars in Hollywood at the time was, in reality, a "mess," and "that's not all there is to it," according to Winslet. (In an interview with Vanity Fair, while revisiting the film's famous "I'm flying" scene, Winslet said, "It was not a dream come true to lock lips with him [DiCaprio]," Entertainment Weekly wrote. But in defense of DiCaprio, she blames the makeup."
Of her co-star - who she remains close friends with to this day - Winslet joked, "My God, he's quite the romantic, isn't he?" no wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio.
But maybe not on a movie set.""We kept kissing, but I was wearing a lot of pale makeup and we both had to do makeup checks in between takes. (This visual!)
As Winslet dealt with his tan blotches all over his face, DiCaprio's face looked "a little chapped from his face" thanks to the rest of her makeup, which was a paler shade.
"Oh my God, it was a mess," Winslet said.
But that's not all. Winslet also recalled that she hit her knee on the railing of the boat several times and had to go through several takes to get the shot right. 'It was a nightmare,' Winslet said, looking back at this iconic scene. Leo couldn't stop laughing, and [director James Cameron] obviously wanted a certain light, so we had to reshoot it about four times."
To push it further, Winslet said that she and DiCaprio were basically inaccessible to the makeup team during filming. 'It was part of the ship, not part of the whole set of the actual ship that was there,' Winslet said. 'We had to climb a ladder to get there. Hair and makeup couldn't get to us. You wouldn't know it because Leo looks completely natural, but he had to lie on a sun bed and there was a lot of fake tan makeup on him. Gesturing toward her own dress, Winslet added, "I hid his makeup and brushes and sponges and put my makeup and brushes and sponges on the other side." Regarding her own costume, the actress added, "When I look at that, I know how hard it was to breathe in that bloody corset."
Aside from the hassle, Winslet admitted to the outlet that it was "pretty funny" to see her and DiCaprio "giggling and covered in each other's makeup."
The film ultimately won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, and remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time, according to Entertainment Weekly. I'm very proud of this film," said the filmmaker. 'People from other generations are discovering this movie or seeing it for the first time.'
The only downside is that, to this day, Winslet can't get on the boat without being asked to recreate that "I'm flying" scene." "It makes my head hurt," she said, adding that she is asked "every time, without fail.
As for whether she complies with the request, "Sometimes yes. . and sometimes yes," Winslet said.
