Katie Holmes changes from a perfect summer sweater dress to a crisp suit for an afternoon

When not commuting to the office, the definition of summer work attire becomes flexible. Katie Holmes broke the stereotypes of business attire with summer sweater dresses and color-coordinated suits.

Katie Holmes first took her signature stroll through SoHo in a twist on the knit dress styled by Bree Welch. From the front, Me+Em's design appears to be a striped skirt and navy tank style. However, the dress has a small cutout at the waist and a fully open layered style in the back. It wasn't as overtly sultry as when Jennifer Lope styled a sheer crochet beach cover-up for an urban dinner, but it was ever so slightly more subversive (and airy on a hot summer day).

The actress leaned into the sophisticated side of the dress with an A.P.C. Collection mary jane and bright red lips.

Remixing materials for fall and winter is something of a celebrity specialty. Last month, Gigi Hadid wore a sweater dress over jeans and a button-up cardigan open over pants for a chic look. Last week, Taylor Swift turned an oversized fringed sweater into a mini dress for a cabaret visit. Holmes' piece already has skin-revealing cutouts in the silhouette, and it is truly a pre-made style to reinvigorate the classic sweater dress for summer.

In any other closet, the Me+Em dress would only be worn for one day. Holmes is different. A few hours later, she and her stylist, Welch, were on their way to a dinner at the Tribeca Film Festival when she turned the blue with a pop of red styling into a second look. A slate blue suit from Salon 1884 with red Lukasheva mules and coordinating lips. She also layered jewelry by Copenhagen Fashion Week darling Sophie Ville Brahe.

Holmes ditched the shirt under her double-breasted blazer and styled it with just the top. It was a casual move, but it gave her businesslike separates a cool-girl appeal.

Yesterday's consecutive looks were just the latest in a series of effortless outfit changes for Holmes. Last week, she wore Banana Republic basics (styled with Chanel flats) and on-trend summer essentials (including a buttery yellow slip dress). A few days later, for a Chanel event at the Tribeca Film Festival, she also showed off her range of luxury fashion, from extra wide-leg pants and tiny tops to see-through lace sets.

Holmes' fashion marathon began with the A.P.C. collection, which was presented on June 7. The actress told Marie Claire that the collection was all about her desire to feel "normal" and "everyday." Based on today's look, a few words apply to her style.
