Celine Dion confesses to taking large doses of Valium to relieve symptoms of stiff shoulder syndrome.
Celine Dion has opened up more about how she has dealt with shoulder stiffness syndrome over the years.
The superstar sat down with Hoda Kotb on a June 11 NBC News special, explaining that at one point she was taking large doses of Valium to manage her symptoms and continue performing.
"I tried a lot of different things. When you don't know what you have, trying different things can kill you," Dion explained (via Us Weekly).
"Honestly, I didn't know it would kill me. For example, if I take 20 mg of Valium, I just walked from my dressing room to backstage and it's gone. Not that fast; 20 minutes."
At the time, the singer had not yet been diagnosed with SPS and was scrambling to do everything possible to manage the pain.
Of diazepam, she said, "It can kill you, it can make you stop breathing. My body got used to 20 mg, 30 mg, 40 mg. My whole body relaxed. for two weeks, a month ...... But it doesn't work anymore. More, more, more."
At one point, Dion was taking up to 90 mg. '90 mg of Valium can kill you. It can make you stop breathing," she said (via NBC News).
Despite experiencing certain symptoms as early as 2008, Dion put off canceling performances as long as she could.
For People's latest cover story, she said this: "I was depressed, depressed, depressed. It took everything out of my life," she said. [But it's like, say, kids rollerblading and their ankles hurt. I say, 'Well, take a break from rollerblading,' and the kids don't want to tell me. I didn't want to stop. I wanted to stay on stage. I wanted to be brave instead of smart. It was wrong."
In 2022, Starr was officially diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome.
In December 2022, Dion went public with his diagnosis in an emotional Instagram post, canceling some tour dates and rescheduling others.
Since then, she has been candid with fans about the details of her illness and is preparing to release a documentary about her SPS journey.
