Taylor Swift reportedly "obsessed" with the details of her colorful "Eras Tour" outfit.
As the lights dimmed for the sold-out crowd and Taylor Swift rose from the stage to perform her "1989" set for the first time in Paris last month, she revealed one of the more dramatic updates to her "Eras" tour outfit. In this case, rather than neatly matching Roberto Cavalli's beaded set, she replaced it with a new look from the Italian label. She paired a deliberately mismatched, sparkly crop top and skater skirt with two-color Shiny Louboutin boots. On the first night, she wore a pink crop and blue skirt. Soon, she also debuted purple and orange and blue and yellow variations.
These unconventional combinations were intentional changes for the "Cruel Summer" singer, if not necessarily Easter eggs. In a June 11 interview with Women's Wear Daily, Roberto Cavalli's creative director, Fausto Puglisi, said that Swift was trying to capture the bubbly, big-tent pop sound of 1989 by wearing color on the European leg of her tour. She revealed that she "insisted" on wearing a block outfit. Puglisi told the outlet, "I love it because it reminds me immediately of Miami Beach."
Puglisi, along with her longtime stylist Joseph Cassell Falconer, designed more than 20 Eras tour outfits for Swift. Some, like the snake sequins on the Reputation jumpsuit, referenced general motifs from her past albums. (The snake is the unofficial mascot of her sixth studio album.) Others were named after silhouettes or colors Swift had worn on previous tours.
In the case of the 1989 crop top and skirt set, the designers wanted to modify the playful set Swift wore on her 2015 album world tour. "When we were talking about designing that section of the tour, I knew that Taylor was wearing these flattering A-line skirts that were very American, fresh, young, and cool, but I wanted to create something different," Puglisi told WWD interview.
"I wanted to add a fashion statement with a capital F."
Initially, it was a matching beaded crop top in shades of blue, orange, green, and pink with a twin skirt and Christian Louboutin ankle boots. Later, for the European leg of the tour, Puglisi, Swift, and Cassel presented a mix-and-match set of ombre shades of yellow, blue, pink, purple, and green. To match, glitter-coated Louboutin ankle boots were also coordinated.
Representing Roberto Cavalli on tour, Puglisi wore two fringed dresses for the "Fearless" set. Both dresses are reminiscent of some of the "You Belong With Me" singer's early tour and music video outfits from the first version of "Fearless," released in 2008.
"The Queen deserves a collection," Puglisi said of Swift's extensive tour wardrobe."
"She is the queen now - look at how she gets people excited.
The collection has only gotten better since the European leg of the Eras tour began in May. Swift unveiled variations of all but one of the so-called Eras' new tour outfits at the kick-off performance in Paris, France. These included a bright red dress by Alberta Ferretti for Folklore and a sequined sherbet orange bodysuit by Versace for Lover. Vogue magazine also reported that Swift had over 250 pairs of Louboutins custom-made for the tour.
Swift's sixth album, Reputation, is the only album that has not had a corresponding outfit updated for the duration of the tour. Some fans speculate that this is an indication of the status of the "Taylor's Version" re-recording of the album. Puglisi, who designed the one-legged jumpsuit, did not comment on its hidden meaning in an interview with WWD.
When Taylor Swift takes the stage in Liverpool, England next weekend, she may mix up her blue and pink set to evoke the British flag. Fashion journalist and Taylor Swift fan Sarah Chapelle (who analyzed fashion in the singer's tortured poet section for Marie Claire) said Swift stirred up a Roberto Cavalli top and skater skirt when the colors came together for the host country of her tour stop. He noted that she winked. In Stockholm, Sweden, he was dressed in blue and yellow, reminiscent of the Swedish flag.
