Dakota Johnson tests the limits of see-through trend in see-through outfit

With this spring's trend of see-through skirts in stores, Marie Claire asked stylists how to actually wear see-through pieces. Celebrity styling duo Daniel O'Connell and Alix Gropper offered one piece of advice: "Underwear should be a seamless extension of the skirt. But there are exceptions. If you're Dakota Johnson, or simply fearless, you can make the innermost layer stand out.

On Monday, June 10, Dakota Johnson spent an afternoon in New York City's Soho wearing an unabashedly sheer Gucci outfit. The color of her sheer long-sleeved cardigan was closer to a suggestion of blush than a pure shade, and a yellow bra was visible underneath. A sun-like bralette paired with a pair of high-waisted yellow briefs, which showed through her orange chiffon skirt. Only the shoes were burgundy patent leather.

As avid readers of Marie Claire know, sheer fabrics have appeared on the runway for several consecutive seasons. Sheer fabrics in stained-glass shades were also on trend at Gucci's 2025 Cruise collection, presented at a show at London's Tate Modern Gallery this past May, including the skirt worn by Johnson.

Not surprisingly, the actress and her stylist, Kate Young, wanted to try this trend, which has also been sampled at Prada, Valentino, and Fendi (among others), with a Gucci look. Johnson is no stranger to Milan-based luxury brand Gucci, appearing in several ad campaigns and appearing in shows alongside Solange, Dua Lipa, and Daisy Edgar Jones. Her head-to-toe catwalk styling is reminiscent of the outfit Bella Hadid wore last month, featuring platform loafers and a micro-mini skirt pulled straight from the runway. [Johnson baring all in a see-through skirt and coordinating baby top is a 180-degree turn from her recent outfits. During a photo shoot in New York for The Materialists, an arranged romantic comedy set for release next fall, Johnson was dressed like a lovesick but relatable heroine, rather than a front-row fashion plate. Paparazzi photos of her show her in an outfit that makes you want to shop: a bouncy Doyen top, jeans, kitten heels, a Reformation dress, and Blake Lively-approved Converse sneakers.

Johnson may be experimenting with the 2024 trends of the moment, but she adheres to the same personal style tenets from her "Fifty Shades of Grey" days. I like the androgynous look, but I also like feminine shapes," she told Elle in a 2015 interview about her approach to dressing. It really depends on [what I'm] in the mood for."
