Private Letter from the Late Queen Elizabeth to Former Midwife to be Auctioned, Detailing Her Life as Mother to Charles and Anne

A decades-old letter from the late Queen Elizabeth to a former midwife is up for auction, detailing how the former monarch adjusted to life as a mom.

The letter, dated October 4, 1950, was written less than two months after then Queen Elizabeth and her late husband, Prince Philip, became parents of two children when Princess Anne joined the family and now Prince Charles officially became her brother.

The Queen wrote to Helen Lowe, a former midwife, who was also a member of the family.

"We are all doing very well here. But on the third day the jeep that takes me everywhere on the ground would not pick me up and I had to walk to the road." But the air is so good that I feel good every day and still fall asleep in the afternoon, but not so often now"

.

According to People, Queen Elizabeth wrote the letter while staying at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, which the royal family often visited in late summer and early fall.

The late Queen went on to say that her son Charles was "getting fat" and "has a good appetite and is not getting enough exercise."

"When he sees something out of reach, turns his back to me meaningfully and says, 'Mom, lift me up!' ', I find it very difficult to explain it," she continued.

"He enjoyed the train ride much more than Anne, who had never been much of a rattler to begin with. The sugar in his food is slowly coming up, and he often sleeps until bottle time, so he doesn't seem quite so ravenous.

"The children's grandmother openly spoils her eldest daughter and will do the same for Anne given the chance!" she added, elaborating that she hopes to meet the midwife in person at her daughter Princess Anne's next christening.

"Sincerely, Elizabeth," the matriarch signed the four-page letter.

According to People, as of June 28, the highest bid for the handwritten, autographed letter was $1,149.

"This wonderful letter from the princess touches on the health of her two young children: Charles, who is a month shy of his second birthday, and Anne, who was only one month and 19 days old when this letter was written," said RR Auction Executive Vice President Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of RR Auctions, said in a statement to the magazine.
