Prince Charles unveils new portrait to mark Armed Forces Day in the UK
King Charles has unveiled a new royal portrait to mark Armed Forces Day in the UK.
The King, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the nation's armed forces, unveiled the new photo on June 29 to honor and recognize military personnel and their families, veterans, and active duty cadets.
According to People, the portrait was taken in November 2023 in the Great Gallery of Windsor Castle, but was released on the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
The new portrait was shared through Kensington Palace's many social media accounts, including Instagram.
"This photo features Her Majesty in Field Marshal No. 1 full ceremonial frock coat with medals, sword, and decorations," reads part of the photo caption, encouraging fans and viewers to learn more about the royal family and British armed forces.
The portrait was taken by photographer Hugo Burnand, who was credited on social media along with the royal family; according to People, Burnand has taken many official royal photographs, including the official coronation portrait and the cabinet king photo.
Burnand also shot the 2005 wedding portraits of King Charles and Camilla.
While royal fans favored the most recent portrait of King Charles, they compared it to the first official portrait after his coronation.
"His Majesty's portrait is much better ❤️," one fan wrote in a comment.
"I like this portrait best. You can see his sensitive and intelligent eyes," another posted.
"Great portrait 👏👏👏👏👏 much better than that red painting. Long live the King ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️," commented another fan.
In addition to the new royal portrait, Buckingham Palace released a video of Queen Camilla giving a heartfelt message to veterans and active duty military personnel.
"It is a great honor to be with you all on Armed Forces Day. Whether in this country or overseas, we celebrate the service of the men and women in our armed forces and thank them for all they do to protect this country of ours," she said in the video, which was reportedly shot in the Morning Room at Clarence House and produced by the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS).
"We also remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of stability and peace around the world," she continued, referring to her recent experience in Normandy in honor of D-Day. We remember the incredible bravery of the Allied land, sea, and air forces that brought about the liberation of Western Europe, and we will forever be indebted to them."
Queen Camilla went on to say that she knows that decades later, "the same spirit and the same qualities remain very much throughout our armed forces as you carry out your missions in the face of many difficulties and dangers," seemingly alluding to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
"In so doing, you are not only defending this island, you are defending freedom beyond these shores. Your determination, your relentless efforts, and your selfless loyalty to each other and to Great Britain are as enduring as our gratitude."
