Wimbledon organizers "hopeful" that Princess Kate will attend this year, "but her health and recovery are the top priority".

The staples of the Crown Princess's summer diary are royal events such as Trooping the Colour, the Order of the Garter, and Royal Ascot in June, Wimbledon in July, and the annual family outing to Balmoral to end the summer in Scotland in August.

But 2024 has not been a regular year for Kate, and her so-called normalcy (whatever that is) was blown to pieces when she was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. Kate attended Trooping the Colour on June 15, her first royal duty since Christmas 2023, but missed the Order of the Garter ceremony and Royal Ascot the following week (which she would normally have attended), and a state dinner in Japan earlier this week. Next up was Wimbledon. Wimbledon is an event she not only attends every year, but deeply enjoys. Will she attend the tennis tournament?

Kate is a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, a patronage specifically granted by Queen Elizabeth in 2016. (The late Queen Elizabeth patronized the club from 1952, when she became queen, until she passed it on to her granddaughter-in-law 64 years later.) AELTC chair Debbie Jevans told Telegraph Sport that she intends to give Kate "as much flexibility as possible" as her cancer treatment continues. In addition, Telegraph Sport reports that it may not be decided until the morning of the finals who will be awarded the trophy. (Kate watches the tennis at the Royal Box and also presents trophies to the tournament winners as part of her sponsorship)

While Kate's appearance at "Trooping the Colors" was thrilling, palace aides stressed that the outing "does not signal a return to public life," People reported. No date has been set for her full return to royal duties," "People" reported.

Nevertheless, for Princess Kate, who is an avid tennis player and has attended Wimbledon almost every year since her marriage to Prince William (and before their marriage in 2011), Wimbledon seems more like a pleasure than a job. Kate wanted to attend the Grand Slam tournament in 2013 while "pregnant" with her first son, Prince George, but, according to People magazine, "doctors were against it."

Kate's father, Prince George, was not a fan of the tournament.

George participated for the first time in 2022 (and again last year), and his daughter Princess Charlotte made her debut last summer. This year's tournament runs from July 1 (i.e., Monday) through July 14, and Jevans said, "We are hopeful that the Princess of Wales will be able to present the trophy as the club's patron, but her health and recovery is our top priority." As for Kate's attendance, she said, "What we don't know is what we don't know."

In a vulnerable message announcing that she would be attending Trooping the Colour the following day, Kate for her part said that she "hopes to attend some public functions over the summer."

People reported that "her outings over the next few weeks will depend on when she feels able and when medical guidance depends on whether she follows through," but royal writer Katie Nicole said that attending Wimbledon might make Kate feel better.

"Maybe we'll see her at Wimbledon," Nicole told Entertainment Tonight. 'She had a very personal message, talking about wanting to do something that brings her joy. I think that's being in nature, being with the kids, being involved in the daily school routine.

Nicole said of Kate, "She takes great pride in her position in the Lawn Tennis Association. Wimbledon is firmly etched in her diary. I have seen her participate with her family every year so far. I would not be at all surprised if she showed up at Wimbledon.

Royal commentator Emily Andrews said of Kate, according to the Daily Express, "Her treatment is ongoing and will be so for the next few months.

During an appearance on the BBC documentary Sue Barker: Our Wimbledon in 2017, Kate herself said (according to Hello), "I've seen Wimbledon - it was a very big part of my development. 'Wimbledon is like the quintessential British summer, and I think it's an inspiration to young people. That hasn't changed. I think that's what's so great about it."

In addition to Wimbledon, which is all up in the air this summer, "OK" also reports that Kate is "not sure" whether she will join the royal family for their annual summer vacation at Balmoral. A source tells People, "She's doing what's right for her and recuperating privately at home." Regarding her diagnosis and cancer treatment, they added, "She is coping the best she can."
