Charli XCX asks fans to "stop" chanting "Taylor Swift is dead" at her live shows.
Charli XCX is not happy about fans chanting "Taylor Swift is dead" during her shows.
One fan alerted Charli to this disturbing trend by sharing a video on Instagram of her recent DJ set at a nightclub in Sao Paulo." Hey @charli_xcx, your Brazilian fans at your concerts and events associated with you "Taylor is dead!" and are showing harmful behavior by shouting "Taylor is dead!" He wrote.
The Brat singer saw the post and immediately condemned the chant.
"Will people please stop doing this. Online or at my shows," she wrote on Instagram Stories. 'It's the exact opposite of what I want and I'm disturbed that anyone thinks there is room in this community for this kind of thing.'
Charli, whose latest album is now enjoying great success, has a longstanding relationship with the "Fortnite" singer, which no doubt adds to the reasons for shutting down this strange behavior from her fans.
The "Boom Clap" singer was actually one of Swift's opening acts on the 2018 Reputation Tour, with Camila Cabella and Blues being the other opening acts on certain dates of that tour.
However, in an interview with Pitchfork, Charli said, "I'm really grateful that [Taylor] invited me on that tour. But as an artist, it was like getting up on stage and waving to a five-year-old."
After receiving backlash for these comments, Charli took to X (then Twitter) to "make it clear that there is absolutely no shade here, only love!"
She wrote,
She added, "Leading up to that tour, I had played a lot of 18+ clubs, so being on stage in front of all age groups was new to me and allowed me to approach performing with a whole new kind of energy. "
I talked about how great it was to open for Taylor, how I was very grateful for the opportunity I was given and how much fun it was to play in front of a new audience.
