Kate Winslet speaks her mind at the Munich International Film Festival: "It's hard to make a film as a woman, and it's hard to make a film about women.

Ahead of the European premiere of "Lee," a film about war photographer Lee Miller, Winslet said of both starring in and producing the film, "It's hard to make a film as a woman and to make a film about women."

While accepting an award at the Munich International Film Festival, Winslet explained that the release of "Lee" had been postponed and explained why: the decision to postpone the release of "Lee" was due to the strike and the work that my producing partner Kate Solomon and I put into making this film I wanted to talk about the true labor of love that we put into making this film," she said. Winslet added, "I hope that this film will inspire people to have more open ears and eyes to absorb the story of such a phenomenally important historical figure as the formidable Lee Miller."

According to Deadline, Miller is a model turned photographer turned war correspondent. The magazine writes, "She took iconic and often harrowing photographs during World War II." Miller is best known for her iconic shot in the bathtub of Hitler's abandoned mansion in the German city.

"Lee" begins with Miller and her Bohemian friends enjoying life in prewar France, but as the war unfolds, Miller and her friend and fellow photographer David E. Sherman (played by Andy Samberg in "Lee"), including inside the Dachau concentration camp The film draws the audience into the horrors of wartime that were filmed.

"Getting the balance right throughout the film was something I was always conscious of," says Winslet, "so as not to take the audience too quickly into the heart of darkness. It was very important for us not to imitate images of the camps that had been brilliantly portrayed by other filmmakers in the past. We had to be really determined to make sure we were only seeing it through [Miller and Sherman's] eyes."

"Lee" is scheduled for release in the United States on September 27.
