Princess Diana agreed to meet with John F. Kennedy Jr. because her sister-in-law Sarah Ferguson “had the hots for him” and Diana “wanted to give her a shot.

[Princess Diana and John F. Kennedy Jr. met at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City in December 1995. Princess Diana had appeared on the BBC's “Panorama with Martin Bashir,” had written a new book on John Kennedy Jr. entitled “JFK Jr: An Intimate Oral Biography” with Liz McNeil, and had worked with John's wife Caroline Bessette= Kennedy and his sister-in-law Lauren Bessette, was released on the 25th anniversary of his death in a plane crash in 1999.

After John wrote to Diana, Princess Diana replied that she wanted to meet with him in person to discuss his request and that she was in New York and staying in Carlisle. Terenzio and Diana's private secretary, Patrick Jeffson, arranged for the two to meet on a weekday afternoon.

“All I could do was worry,” Terenzio wrote.

“Should I enter through the front door, should I disguise myself, would I start rumors that I was having an affair with her? In the end, John decided to enter through the front door. All the paparazzi had taken up positions at the side door to wait for Diana. Terenzio added, “He went in unnoticed.”

Jeffson advised Diana not to put George on the cover until he had established himself. In his new oral history, Jeffson said, “That's why we thought she would be on the cover in issue 20 or 50 or 100 or something.” The message was clear: “You finish the magazine well, and I'll think about it.”

Of his meeting with John, Jeffson said, “It was never made public. Princess Diana probably wanted to keep a low profile because it would have made a great gossip story.” Wasn't he the most attractive bachelor in the world at the time? It must have been quite an intriguing thing to dream about.”

Diana separated from Prince Charles in 1992, and their divorce was finally finalized in August 1996, eight months after she met John. However, John and Carolyn were already married and were to be married in September 1996.

Diana, like almost every woman alive in December 1995, “had the hots for him, Sarah Ferguson, and I think Diana wanted to give her a shot,” says Jeffson. (Ferguson was in the middle of a divorce from Prince Andrew, which would also be finalized four years later in 1996.)

Ferguson's wife, Diana, was a member of the family for many years.

They wore business attire and drank - John was “quite in awe of her,” Jeffson says. 'It wasn't unpleasant, but he seemed to be on his best behavior. He sat rather on the edge of his chair and looked at her nervously”. But Diana “wasn't nervous at all when she saw him. She was very calm, jovial, smiling and welcoming.”

Unfortunately for John, however, Diana was not very welcoming of being on the cover of George. He accepted her declination “without a fuss,” Jeffson said, adding that he felt Diana's sympathy and concern for him. 'She didn't see him the way the world saw him,' Jeffson said. 'As this big, famous, handsome man. I think she saw him as rather vulnerable, having grown up in public.” After all, Diana, like John, had raised two young boys who had never known life without being permanently fixed on camera.

He was gorgeous, but “she never commented on his looks,” Jeffson said, adding that “she was used to being judged by her looks and couldn't spend much time on it.” “

However, John commented on Diana's looks, telling Terenzio, “She is much taller than I thought she would be and has great legs.”

The two remained in touch through letters after their meeting, and at one point he offered George an interview; in a letter dated February 3, 1997, Diana told John from Kensington Palace that she politely declined the interview and “hope the press will leave you and Carolyn alone. I hope the press will leave you and Carolyn alone. I know how hard it is, but believe it or not, the worst paparazzi are here in Europe.”

Diana died seven months later.

When it came to covering her death in the pages of The George, John refused. Diana's death in a car accident in Paris while being chased by the paparazzi only increased his wife Carolyn's fear of the paparazzi. She told John, “They're dangerous. 'They're dangerous.'” Carolyn was also known, according to oral tradition, to say of the paparazzi, ”I'm afraid of them.”

Only less than two years after Diana's tragic death at age 36, John, Carolyn, and Lauren were killed in a plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean. In less than four years, two of the most famous people on the planet, then in their mid-thirties, inexplicably and tragically went from tea and champagne in Carlisle to just a memory.
