32 photos that epitomize celebrity après-ski style
For those unfamiliar with the term, “après-ski” (which translates as “after ski”) is the aesthetic of “just off the slopes, so head to an overpriced ski lodge for a warm drink by the fire. The term “après-ski” was popularized in the 1950s, when commercial skiing became widespread, and its continued popularity has been attributed to a number of celebrities, including These days, après-ski has outgrown skiing and has become a style blueprint in its own right, slopes or no slopes.
Below are 32 iconic photos of après-ski-wearing celebrities.
Much like characters from “Horizon” and “Yellowstone” (or “Dances with Wolves”), Kevin Costner rocks a cowboy hat and matching cowboy boots in the popular ski resort of Aspen, Colorado. If your style is western, take a cue from this.
This photo cracks me up: a little chilly, but still looking pretty happy, Lil Jon and Adrian Grenier pose together in graphic snow jackets. This one is from 2008's French Connection on the Slopes, and the two celebs actually look ready to hit the slopes. (Take off the goggles and replace the boots with slippers and you get this après-ski.)
This is “Dad Style, Snow Edition,” sporty and silly Stephen Colbert at the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival (USCAF) Celebrity Ski and Snowboard Race in 2007. I have to admit, I wish I had been there to see it. Also, this coat is surprisingly fun.
It may come as no surprise, but this is a celebrity event: the 10th annual Park City Ski Challenge at Operation Smile. Rebel Wilson and partner Ramona Agulma look exceptionally stylish. I love Agulma's red boots, but Wilson's multi-colored peplum jacket has my heart.
In 2016, Joe Jonas gave us not one, but three different patterns, all with surprisingly coherent styles. This was the NYLON + Dream Hotels Après-Ski event at the Sundance Film Festival (literally, as the name implies).
Sophia Umansky and Kyle Richards are giving us après-ski for their reality show. The cowboy hats are laughable, but the warm puffer coats (Richards' is Prada), practical snow boots, and thick gloves are perfect for a post-ski, pre-dinner stroll outside.
Can't help it: I love these pants. They may be a matching set, but Goldie Hawn's decision to wear only these puffer pants with boots and a light sweater to Aspen makes me happy. If you want to copy her, add a jacket.
Brooke Burke looked radiant in silver at the 2018 Operation Smile 7th Annual Park City Ski Challenge. Just swap the boots for the same colorful sneakers and replace the jacket with a thick cardigan or poncho.
We love the moon boots by Haley Bieber (2022, walking with a friend in Aspen); the YSL handbag, leather leggings, and big boxy jacket with oversized shoulder pads are perfect for staying warm and chic. Though I would love to know more about the lime green coat.
Operation Smile's 7th Annual Park City Ski Challenge is very colorful with Matt Eisman (host of “American Ninja Warrior”), actor Darren Criss, and his wife, writer/producer Mia Swier. This rainbow ski suit dress is something I want in my closet immediately.
Irina Shayk, who attended the 2016 Audi Hahnenkamm Race weekend event, shows us her effortless cold-weather style in a cape jacket with an asymmetrical button-up front. With a few tweaks (I would definitely replace her heeled boots with flats), this would be perfect.
Attending the 2016 Audi Hahnenkamm Race weekend, Gwyneth Paltrow opted for a snowy white coat and matching turtleneck sweater. Her cap-toe snow boots, contrasted with leather leggings, were very chic and warm without being bulky.
Clint Eastwood, a participant in the 1971 Benson & Hedges Celebrity Ski Race, appears to be enjoying a nice post-race drink. He wears a sheer turtleneck and black pants, a fun reminder that ski outfits used to be more expensive (and less practical) than they are now.
Queen Letizia enjoys skiing with her family during a private trip to Jaca, Spain, in 2017. Her and King Felipe's all-black look is of course classic and streamlined, but I love the bright colors of Leonor and Sofia's outfits.
Robert Redford looks focused as he balances on his skis (this is Sundance Ski Resort, Sundance, Utah, 1977). Wearing light black jeans, a classic '70s winter jacket, and a fluffy hat, he is weather appropriate but surprisingly reasonable.
Spectacular. The scenery isn't bad either. (Daniel Craig and Léa Seydoux are here for a photocall for the James Bond film Spectre. Seydoux's cropped patterned coat and warm hat are top-notch.
Italian fashion designer (and creator of her eponymous brand) Elsa Schiaparelli looks like a vision in this 1936 photo. (Proving that après-ski was with us long before the term “après-ski” was coined.) The lightweight cropped jacket and pants tucked into ski boots are perfect for both on and off the slopes.
In 2015, Queen Mary of Denmark and her daughter appear to be enjoying their annual ski trip to Verbier, Switzerland. How lovely that Princess Josephine is matching her bright red sled. And Mary's boots are perfect for sledding and the festivities that follow.
It is very likely that Rihanna did not ski in this outfit (although it would have been great fun if she had). Nevertheless, the oversized white coat adds warmth and structure, while the hoodie and boots add a casual off-duty look.
The late Natalie Wood at the Benson & Hedges Celebrity Ski Race in Bear Valley, California, in 1971 In the 1970s, Wood took a break from acting but still attended public events. Those sunglasses, like the leggings, seemed perfect for skiing and after.
Brad Pitt and Dallas co-star Shalane McCall (they were rumored to be dating) are having fun at the Mountain High Ski Resort in Wrightwood, Calif. They obviously have ski boots and gear, but their T-shirts, sweaters, and jeans are more appropriate for a drink at the chalet at the end of the day.
French singers Johnny Halliday and Sylvie Vartan on a ski trip circa 1970. Vartan's purple snowsuit and fur balaclava are incredibly stylish, as are the teddy and shearling gloves she wears. And his flared pants are great too. Après-ski throwback style at its best.
Mariah Carey is always over-the-top in the best sense of the word, and her après-ski style will be no exception. She leaves her Aspen, Colorado hotel in 2023, and her poncho (think Burberry) matches her earmuffs beautifully. The simple black color of the rest of the outfit makes this outfit seem (slightly) more carefree.
Cheryl Tiegs attends the John Denver Celebrity Ski Classic at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe, California. This striped salopette and turtleneck underneath are the perfect layered look.
This outfit by Kate Middleton was compared to one worn by Princess Diana (her outfit is also on this list) on a ski trip with then-Prince Charles; in 2018, Kate attended an event organized by the Norwegian Ski Federation with Prince William and wore a red and white jacket recalls some of the colors of the Norwegian flag and looks wintery and stylish.
This photo of Italian actor Gina Lollobrigida was taken at a ski lodge in the 50s. She is wearing a cable-knit sweater, dark-colored pants, a scarf around her waist, and fluffy gloves.
The Dutch royal family is on their annual Austrian ski vacation, and I love what Princess Maxima and Princess Laurentien are wearing. I love both Princess Maxima and Princess Laurentien's outfits. The red is bold and stands out, but I prefer the black coat and contrasting white pants.
Brigitte Bardot in casual après-ski. She is vacationing at the French ski resort of Meribel. My favorite, however, is the classic beehive under that chunky hat.
Cher on vacation with her children (not pictured) in Aspen, Colorado in 1977. Her long, distinctive hair is tied up in a bandana, and she is wearing a colorful purple ski jumpsuit and big, fluffy black boots that match her hair. This is truly Cher.
Sophia Loren at Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956, in a characteristically chic outfit (albeit with cold feet). Silk pants and a cable-knit sweater with a matching hood are an absolutely adorable way to stay warm, but not at the expense of the style she is known for.
Princess Diana was a fashion force throughout her time as royalty, including ski trips. This is Diana wearing a fabulous ruby ski suit at the start of a ski vacation in 1984 in Fadootz, Liechtenstein. The matching red hat of then-Prince Charles is also fun.
In terms of style, nothing beats Grace Kelly, with her two children, Albert II and Caroline, in Gstaad, Switzerland, in 1962. The cable-knit turtleneck, the black pants tucked into practical yet chic boots, and the fuzzy knit cap, all of which would have made her look like a real lady, but for the fact that she was wearing a turtleneck, a pair of black pants, and a fuzzy knit hat.
