Madonna biopic to be revived and titled
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Madonna biopic is back in the works more than a year and a half after the project was scrapped, and after news broke in January 2023 that a film about the singer's life and her decades-long career was not moving forward, the tide has turned, Madonna herself seems to have admitted as much.
In a new Instagram post, “Madonna shared a collection of photos of herself working at a typewriter, along with a row of papers around her,” writes The Hollywood Reporter. In one photo, the first page of what appears to be a screenplay shows the potential title of the film, “Who's That Girl. Who's That Girl” is a reference to her 1987 song and movie of the same name. The script was previously called “M Untitled,” but a line was drawn through its working title and replaced with “Who's That Girl.”
“I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this..... .okay,” she captioned it, adding, ”(Story of my life).” The post also included a glimpse of the script, which reads, “Rewrite by Madonna and ECW.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, ECW appears to refer to screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson, who was the writer of “Secretary” and came on board after Diablo Cody had to leave the project.
Madonna was originally slated to direct the biopic, which would have starred Julia Garner as the Material Girl, Deadline reported, after Garner “proved herself outstanding in song and dance boot camp.” She will reportedly still play the Queen of Pop. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the lengthy audition process for the role of Madonna will see many stars vying for the lead role, including Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, and Alexa Demme, with hopefuls participating in “intense, sometimes 11-hour choreography sessions with Madonna's choreographer and the artist herself. The hopefuls participated in “intense choreography sessions, sometimes lasting up to 11 hours, with Madonna's choreographer and the artists themselves.
After the project was shut down a year and a half ago, a source told the magazine that “development of the film was a constant struggle, with drafts of the script always exceeding 180 pages. There was talk of splitting the film in two or making it into a mini-series, but that never happened.” [Sources at the time said (and it is quite understandable), “You have 40 years of success, and it's very difficult to put it all together in one movie,” they said of Madonna's rise to fame in the early 1980s.
But now, it seems, the powers that be are trying to challenge that. Is it too early to book tickets?
