Prince William reportedly was encouraged to sign a prenuptial agreement when he married Kate Middleton 13 years ago, but refused.

Before his April 29, 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton, Prince William was encouraged to sign a prenuptial agreement, but he refused, according to The Mirror.

The “warning from some officials” to sign the prenuptial agreement apparently came from those who remember Prince William's own parents' divorce fiasco, which concluded in 1996. At the time, Prince Charles had to pay Princess Diana 17 million pounds (converted to more than $22 million) to settle the matter. Three of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's four children divorced, and all announced their separation from their spouses in 1992, the year of the late queen. Princess Anne and her ex-husband Mark Phillips separated and divorced that year, and the divorces of Prince Charles and Princess Diana and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson were not finalized until four years later.

After William and Kate's engagement was announced in November 2010, Diana's former private secretary Patrick Jeffson said, “If she were my sister, I would tell her to sign a firm prenuptial agreement.

“Kate is trying to go into business, not just marriage.”

However, when Kate walked down William's aisle, no prenuptial agreement was in place and “no legally binding document was drawn up before the wedding to protect the future king's estate or to allow Kate to maintain a certain lifestyle if they were to separate The Mirror reported that “no legally binding document was drawn up before the wedding to allow Kate to maintain a certain lifestyle if they were to separate. A source told the Daily Mail at the time that “no prenuptial agreement was signed for this wedding,” and denied that it had been suggested to William that a prenuptial agreement should be signed in the first place. Neither Charles and Diana nor Andrew and Fergie had a prenuptial agreement, but as the Mirror put it, these marriages had “different outcomes.”

Indeed, the current marriage between the Prince and Princess of Wales seems stronger than ever after 13 years and many difficulties this year, especially with regard to Kate's health. Marie Claire magazine reported yesterday that Kate is grateful for everything William has done for her and her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, and that she is “truly touched” by all that they have done for her.
