Princess Kate invites Princess Charlotte to Wimbledon to fulfill a “long-standing promise
Like Mother, Like Daughter Princess Charlotte, like her mother, the Princess of Wales, “has always loved tennis,” royal biographer Ingrid Sward told The Sun. She added: “Tennis is a big family thing on both sides.” Of course, she was referring not only to the royal family, but also to the Middleton family, which consists of Charlotte's grandparents, Michael and Carol, her uncle James, and her aunt Pippa.
“It's a super special day for Kate to be able to share it with Charlotte, and it's even more fun for her to have Charlotte there and explain to her in detail what's going on,” Sward said. [By taking Charlotte to Wimbledon yesterday to watch the men's singles final, Kate kept a long-standing promise to her only daughter, and it was not a spur-of-the-moment decision. Says Sward, “It was a long-standing promise that Kate would take Charlotte to the finals as a special treat.”
“Kate felt guilty about not being able to spend as much time as she wanted with her children due to post-treatment fatigue.”
Charlotte was also there “to distract things from her [Kate],” Sward added. Kate wanted to be at Wimbledon on the day of the final if she could.”
Kate's appearance yesterday followed her triumphant return to royal duties at Trooping the Colour almost exactly a month earlier, the first time she has been seen in public since Christmas 2023. Kate, herself a tennis enthusiast as well as a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which has hosted the legendary tournament since 2016, apparently realized that she would not be able to attend both the women's final on Saturday and the men's final on Sunday She was apparently aware that she would be unable to attend both Saturday's women's final and Sunday's men's final. But this will be her second appearance in a year, and probably her last until the school vacations are over.”
As with Trooping the Colour, “Charlotte is still showing that she is still her mother's little girl,” body language expert Judy James told the Mirror of Charlotte's Wimbledon appearance. (The two had other plans for this year.) “She's now grown up enough to walk independently beside and behind her mother, and Kate only gives her back a small, affectionate touch forward when shaking hands.”
James added that Charlotte is “attuned” to her mother and is a mirror of her mother: “Charlotte still clearly uses her mother as an example of body language. She appears to be closely attuned to Kate, changing her pose to mirror her mother while they all stood around talking."
James added that ”Charlotte's body language is very much in line with her mother's, and she is still very much in tune with her mother's.
Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond told OK that Charlotte has a special bond with her mother, which was on full display at both Trooping the Colour last month and at Wimbledon yesterday. 'I adore my oldest son George, my only daughter Charlotte, and the baby of the family, Louis. 'As Charlotte has grown older and witnessed the shock of her mother being ill, I am sure that bond has grown even closer.'
Recalling James' comment that Charlotte mirrors her mother, Bond said, “Charlotte is probably at an age now where she feels she can reverse the roles a bit and take care of her mother as she recovers.” 'Charlotte resembles Lady Catherine in every way, from her appearance to her love of sports and the outdoors. In time, like Catherine and her mother Carol, they will be more than just mother and daughter; they will be good companions for each other.
And when Kate received the standing ovation she deserved, no one had a bigger smile on her face than Charlotte.
