Bette Midler's secret to her 40-year marriage is “separate bedrooms.”

Bette Midler revealed the secret to her wonderful 40-year marriage.

In an interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” when asked why she and her husband Martin von Haselberg have been happy for so long, Midler replied without hesitation and with a twinkle in her eye.

Further explaining why this is essential for the couple, Midler said, “My husband snores.”

She also said of her marriage, “It's been a great road.”

Perhaps the most striking aspect of this is that Midler and von Haselberg knew each other for only six weeks before they tied the knot in Las Vegas around December 1984 and have enjoyed a beautiful relationship ever since. They share a daughter, Sophie, born in 1986, who coincidentally appears in her mother's new film, The Fabulous Four, which opens this week.

The marriage was talked about in the first place because there is a scene in the film where Midler's character tries on the tightest wedding dress you've ever seen, and Susan Sarandon's character makes this great joke: “I think you should stay away from open flames.”

On the subject of Midler's daughter Sophie, the “Hocus Pocus” actress admitted that she was “disgusted” that her only child was going into acting. 'More than disgust, I was afraid for my daughter. She was just a little girl and I made a terrible mistake by saying, 'If you go into show business, I will kill you.'

She added, “She is wonderful, great, and the love of my life.”
