Why the Royal Family's income has increased by $58 million.
The Royal Family is known for many things, including its impressive wealth. King Charles, for example, reportedly has assets as high as $770 million, but his bank balance is about to get even bigger: according to the BBC, the Crown Estate, which consists of real estate and land owned by the royal family, just released its annual financial report showing a profit of 1.1 billion pounds (about $1.42 billion) The Crown Estate has just released its annual financial report showing a profit of 1.1 billion pounds ($1.42 billion).
This frankly staggering figure is apparently due to additional profits generated from six offshore wind farms. As a result, the Royal Sovereign Grant will receive a significant increase, with the BBC reporting that it will increase from 86.3 million pounds ($111.5 million) in FY 2024/25 to 132 million pounds ($170.6 million) in FY 2025/2026. The plan is to increase to 132 million pounds ($170.6 million) in FY2025/2026.
Sovereign grants fund the Royal Family's dizzying array of official duties and activities, from overseas travel to garden parties. Even though the Sovereign Grant is funded by the British taxpayer, the amount paid to the Royal Family each year is directly tied to the Crown Estate's profits; in 2023, the Royal Family will receive 12% of the Crown Estate's profits instead of 25%, simply because the wind farm has generated so much revenue. The BBC reported that the Crown Estate will receive the equivalent of 12% of the Crown Estate's profits, instead of 25%, simply because the wind farm has generated so much income.
Although being royalty seems like a huge expense, King Charles actually proposed reducing that percentage; according to the BBC, Prince Charles wanted more money to be spent for the “wider public good” due to the family's fortune.
As well as receiving money from sovereign grants, Prince Charles also made a fortune as the owner of the Duchy of Cornwall. One of the King's former aides told the Sunday Times Rich List in 2024 that “after [his divorce from Princess Diana] wiped out his capital, the King began to accumulate some from the Duchy. Tens of millions of dollars, no more. Some have suggested that Camilla brought a lot of money into their relationship, but that is not correct.”
