When naming their only daughter, the Prince and Princess of Wales (then the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) wanted to honor William's late mother, Princess Diana. At the time of Charlotte's birth nine years ago, Princess Diana's friend Simone Simmons told the Daily Express that the late Princess Diana would have been “overjoyed” that William and Kate had chosen to name their only daughter.

“It's a way for William to honor his mother's memory. 'A way to ensure that Diana's legacy lives on. This way she will never be forgotten.”

Simmons added, “When Diana was alive, William promised Diana that he would restore HRH to her when he became king. This is his way of doing it."
