'SNL' Confirms Maya Rudolph Will Return as Vice President Kamala Harris in Season 50
It's official! Actress Maya Rudolph is returning to "Saturday Night Live" to reprise her role as Vice President Kamala Harris in season 50 of the beloved sketch comedy series.
On Tuesday, July 31, Deadline confirmed Rudolph's return and learned that pre-production on Rudolph's Apple TV+ comedy series "Loot" has been paused. According to the publication, season 3 of the series was scheduled to begin filming on August 26, but the series' cast and crew "were informed earlier this week that production had been postponed due to scheduling conflicts."
Deadline notes that "Loot" is produced by Universal Television, the sibling company of NBC that produces "Saturday Night Live," making it arguably easier for the late-night comedy show to "borrow" Rudolph for Season 50 and with the upcoming presidential election noted that it is in the midst of entering its final months.
Ever since President Joe Biden announced that he would end his 2024 presidential campaign and endorse Vice President Harris as his presidential candidate, the Internet has been clamoring for Rudolph to return to SNL and reprise her beloved role as "Mamala" Harris.
"I can't believe how quickly everyone rallied around Maya Rudolph playing Kamala Harris," one person posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, referring to how quickly the Democrats rallied around the vice president in support of President Biden.
"Why shouldn't we have an open primaries among some of the best up-and-coming sketch performers in the country?
"Tonight I had dinner with a neighbor who I thought was leaning red. Maya Rudolph was in a movie we saw, and one of them said, 'She's Kamala Harris herself!' ' I said.
"Wait! Kamala Harris being a candidate means that Maya Rudolph will be on Saturday Night Live. For this I am grateful."
In 2020, Rudolph returned to the SNL stage during the presidential campaign and debates, along with many well-known actors including Woody Harrelson and Jim Carrey.
For her efforts, Rudolph won the 2020 Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as "America's Favorite Aunt," Deadline reported at the time.
It is safe to assume that another Emmy may be in her future.
