Simone Biles and U.S. Team Win Gold in Women's Gymnastics

The mood was festive as the U.S. team won gold in the women's gymnastics team at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Simone Biles, Jordan Childs, Jade Carey, Sunisa Lee, and Hesley Rivera were triumphant in the women's artistic team total, scoring a combined 171.296 points, The New York Times reported. Biles' 14.666 points in her last performance clinched the team victory.

Team USA built a lead of about six points over Italy, which took the silver medal in second place. Meanwhile, Brazil took the bronze medal. The win for the U.S. women's team was especially gratifying because it came after the team finished second at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Biles withdrew before the 2020 finals, citing health issues. As a result, her return to form in Paris was exciting to watch.

Biles' gold medal win also solidified her status as the American gymnast with the most Olympic medals, surpassing Shannon Miller, who had previously tied her, USA Today reported. It is also worth noting that Biles, 27, set a record as the oldest American woman to win an Olympic gold medal.

Following the success of the team competition, the gymnasts will move on to the individual finals this weekend. Biles will compete for gold in the individual all-around and the vault, beam, and floor finals. Her teammate Lee will also compete in the all-around, vault, and bars. Childs will compete in the floor finals, while Carey will compete in the vault.

Many celebrities, including Serena Williams and Spike Lee, participated in the women's artistic team all-around, CNN reported.

Lady Gaga, who performed at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, praised Biles' skills early in the competition. Posting a video clip on Instagram, Lady Gaga said, "She nailed it." What an honor to be so close!" She wrote.
