Princess Kate and Prince William reunite at a costume party after their 2007 divorce.

Princess Kate and Prince William's fairy-tale romance was not always smooth sailing. As most royal fans know, the Prince and Princess of Wales briefly parted ways in 2007. A new biography details that breakup and subsequent reunion.

In his new book, Catherine, The Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen, royal expert Robert Jobson takes readers through the events leading up to Kate and William's divorce. In an excerpt published in the Daily Mail, Jobson recounts how Princess Kate was somewhat caught off guard by the breakup. 'Princess Catherine knew that William was in no hurry to propose and had really intended to wait until he was ready. After all, they loved each other."

Unfortunately, William and Kate were not on the same page in 2007, so the prince broke it off over the phone. He told her they needed to "put some distance" between them to "find their own way" and could not commit to marriage," Jobson recalled. In an emotionally charged 30-minute conversation, they both admitted they were on "different pages"

.

Not surprisingly, the breakup was a major blow to Princess Kate, with Jobson calling it "a devastating blow to Princess Catherine, who felt doubly let down by being dumped over the phone. Rather than grieve the royal romance, Princess Kate decided to stay busy. In addition to vacationing in Ibiza with friends, Kate began attending nightclubs with her sister Pippa Middleton.

According to Jobson, it was Kate's exuberance before the breakup that caught William's attention. While the future princess was romantically involved with another man, William was reportedly spending time in the army barracks. It didn't take long for the prince to realize that giving Kate away was a grave mistake. '[It was] a bitter pill to swallow to see his ex-girlfriend happily taking sensational pictures of him,' Jobson notes. He quickly reconsidered seriously, but realized that after what he had done to Catherine, it would not be easy to bring her back."

According to Jobson, it was a mutual friend who helped bring Kate and William back together. Amateur horseman Sam Waley-Cohen hosted a costume party with a "Freakin Naughty" theme, which reportedly led to some pretty racy outfits. In particular, Kate is said to have "appeared dressed as a nurse." Unsurprisingly, according to Jobson, "William approached her at once."

The costume party seemed to be the perfect place for the two to reunite. A royal expert noted, "The chemistry between William and Princess Catherine did the rest." And, he continued, "They spent the first part of the evening in deep conversation before kissing on the dance floor." The two left the party together, according to the royal expert, and the rest is history.
