Simone Biles Wanted to "Stand Up" for Young Teammates Criticized at Olympics

Simone Biles is ready to defend all of her teammates, even if it means abusing others. And when it comes to members of the U.S. Olympic women's national gymnastics team, Biles is ready to "stand up for them" and lend her voice whenever they are unable to speak up.

In an interview with People, Biles, often referred to as the GOAT, discussed her recent tussle with former teammate Mykayla Skinner In June, Skinner released a deleted YouTube video in which she criticized the US women's gymnastics team. In the video, she said (via HuffPost), "Besides Simone [Biles], I feel like the talent and the depth of talent is not what it used to be." 'I mean, obviously, a lot of the girls aren't working as hard. I mean, obviously, a lot of girls aren't working as hard.

After the U.S. team won gold in the women's gymnastics team, Biles appeared to hit back at Skinner's derogatory comments. Sharing a photo of the team on Instagram, Biles wrote, "No talent, lazy, Olympic champion ❤️᥇🇺🇸." Several Olympic medal holders later revealed that she had been blocked by Skinner.

In an interview with People, the 27-year-old Biles opened up about her decision to speak out in defense of her teammates in the face of Skinner's criticism." It's important because you have to teach them to use their own voice," the gymnast said, revealing how she protects her team. She added, "If you don't, then you are speaking for the voiceless.

As for why she spoke out publicly, Biles said, "These girls are so young and not yet at their full strength, and it just felt right at that moment to stand up for them." Biles leads a women's gymnastics team that includes 20-year-old Lee, 23-year-old Childs, 24-year-old Carey, and 16-year-old Rivera. Importantly, Biles knows that her decision to return the applause "meant a lot" to her younger teammates.

Biles finished the 2024 Paris Olympics with one silver and three gold medals. Naturally, the accomplished athlete was proud of his success, especially after leaving the 2020 Tokyo Olympics early; speaking to People, Biles said he was "very relieved and in a very good place mentally and physically, and I'm very happy with what I've been able to accomplish and what I've done. I am overall very happy with what I have been able to accomplish and what I have been able to do.

Meanwhile, Skinner has asked Biles to call out cyberbullying in a new Instagram post.

"It sickens me to see people supporting cyberbullying that has led to threats of physical harm to me, my husband, and my daughter," she explained. 'So please, at this point, I've had enough and I want it to stop for my family.'

She also apologized for her earlier comments, stating that she was "100% responsible for not expressing well what I was trying to say."
