Simone Biles, Rebecca Andrade, and Jordan Childs Make History with First Black Olympic Gymnasts on Podium

There were many unforgettable moments at the 2024 Paris Olympics, including Celine Dion's electrifying opening ceremony performance. But it was the women's gymnastics floor final that produced an iconic and historic moment.

Rebecca Andrade of Brazil won gold, Simone Biles of the U.S. team took silver, and Jordan Childs won bronze. When the winners received their prizes, they were part of the first gymnastics podium at the Olympics to consist entirely of black athletes.

Making history meant a lot to the trio. 'We can show black power,' Andrade told the Associated Press. 'I love myself, I love the color of my skin. She continued. 'It can be more difficult because of the color of your skin. But you can do it and we proved that it is possible."

Biles, who won one silver and three gold medals at the Paris Olympics, discussed with Childs her decision to bow to Andrade on the podium. 'First of all, we were very excited because the podium was filled with black people. But then Jordan said, 'Should I bow to her? But then Jordan said, 'Should I bow to her? Biles also said she felt it was "the right thing to do" to honor the life-changing moment.

Despite missing out on gold in the women's floor final, Biles was in great spirits after her final event. I've accomplished more than I ever dreamed of, not just at these Olympics, but in this sport," Biles said at a press conference on August 5. "So I can't be mad at my performance, because two or three years ago I didn't think I'd be back here for the Olympic games. So I can't be mad at myself for competing and coming back with four medals. I'm proud of myself and it's always exciting to compete."
