Meghan Markle and Prince Harry play drums during a visit to a school in Colombia

On the third day of their high-profile trip to Colombia, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle enjoyed a trip to a local drum school, where they also tested their own percussion skills.

On Saturday, August 17, the royal couple visited Escuela Tambores de Cabildo, a drum school that helps teach and preserve traditional African drumming. According to the couple's official website, the school also offers “a unique blend of music education, social outreach, and community involvement.”

“Upon their arrival, Prince Harry and Meghan were greeted by the sound of raucous drumming and the school's founder, Rafael Ramos,” their website reports. “After the opening performance, the Duke and Duchess and the Vice President listened to members of the local community, including children, teenagers, parents, and elders, about the importance of preserving Cartagena's culture.”

“I love seeing Meghan's big, big smile,” Ramos said of the pair, who enjoyed drumming on their own, as People reported. 'You can tell she's excited!'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “participated in a student-led drum lesson” alongside Colombian Vice President Francia Marquez and her husband Rafael Ernie Pinillo, the magazine reported.

“The jam session was followed by a performance by locals, and Princess Meghan and Marquez stood up.

The visit was one of many the royal couple enjoyed during their high-profile trip to the South American couple, which aimed to highlight Colombia's people, culture, and history.

Later, the Duke and Duchess (and after a quick costume change) visited the historic village of San Basilio de Palenque, outside Cartagena, Colombia, which in 1619 became the first free African town in the Americas.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were again “greeted by a performance of the Colombian national anthem by local students,” their website notes, before the two “greeted the gathering in Spanish and expressed their heartfelt thanks to the community for their warm welcome.”

(Markle had also demonstrated her Spanish language skills the day before, while speaking to a group of kindergarteners.)

Ultimately, the royal couple is grateful to the Netflix documentary for giving them the opportunity to visit Colombia.

On the first day of the couple's trip, Vice President Francia Marquez revealed part of the reason she extended an invitation to the royal couple to visit her country.

“It was through the media that I came to know Meghan and Harry,” she said.

“I was inspired to say, ‘This is a woman who deserves to visit our country and share her story,’” the vice president continued. And no doubt, her visit will strengthen many women around the world.”
