Elizabeth Debicki of “The Crown” Says She Couldn't Stop Playing Princess Diana After Filming

It turns out that playing the late Princess Diana on television is not as easy as just switching “on” and “off.”

In an exclusive interview in the latest issue of People, actress Elizabeth Debicki said that playing former Princess Diana of Wales on the hit show “The Crown” was difficult to switch off, even when the cameras stopped rolling.

“My voice changed quite a bit and I had to consciously revert to my vocal position and accent,” she said. I had to work so hard at getting my voice so deeply ingrained in me that I had to untwist the wheel.”

Debicki explained that she continued to emulate the beloved princess “for a long time” after the show's sixth and final season, adding that she had to do “quite a lot of physical things” to best transform into the royal, including “tilting my head a lot.”

“Someone said to me. 'Isn't that what you do when you're trying to convince people of something? If someone is like, 'No, you can't do that,'” she continued. 'Are you sure about that?' And I was like, 'Oh, I'm slipping into this.'”

“Now that feeling is gone,” she added.

For those who don't know, the actress played the late Princess of Wales in seasons 5 and 6 of the hit TV series The Crown. Her accurate portrayal of the beloved princess earned her a 2024 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Debicki also won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.

“I am so thrilled that so many of us were nominated,” Debicki says of her co-stars and the show's total of 18 2024 Emmy nominations.

“We're very excited to be nominated,” Debicki says.

“The show has been around for so long that the cast and I have been on it for almost three years in a way,” she adds, “from preparation to filming to reporting, it's a lovely conclusion to a long, beautiful, but sometimes really challenging chapter as an actor.”

If the nominations and awards weren't enough, Debicki also recently received praise from Sam McKnight, who styled Princess Diana's hair for seven years before her untimely death.

In a recent interview with “Queer Eye” star Jonathan Van Ness for his podcast Pretty Curious, McKnight said it was difficult to watch so many different actresses play Princess Diana.

“For most people, it's not a mistake because it's just based on their perception, but I know the actual person and it just looks like a pantomime to me,” McKnight explained at the time. Nevertheless, when I saw a clip of Elizabeth Debicki in the final season of The Crown, I actually thought she was the first person who did a sort of [correct] performance.”
