Arrests made in connection with Matthew Perry's untimely death
Arrests made in connection with actor Matthew Perry's untimely death.
On Thursday, August 15, authorities made arrests in Southern California in connection with Perry's accidental overdose death in 2023, law enforcement sources told NBC News.
So far, few details about the arrests have been revealed, including who was detained and what their connection is to Perry's death; NBC News reported that in high-profile cases of accidental overdose, law enforcement “investigates and, in some cases, charges” those who supplied illegal drugs. It is not uncommon for law enforcement to investigate and in some cases file charges.”
According to a source who spoke to The New York Times, “Details, including the names of those arrested, will be released at a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday morning.”
On October 28, 2023, Perry was found unresponsive in his Pacific Palisades swimming pool. According to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, Perry's cause of death was the acute effects of ketamine. His death was ultimately ruled an accident.
Later, in May 2024, local authorities announced that they were working with federal law enforcement officials to determine the source of the ketamine Perry ingested prior to his death, NBC reported at the time. A spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service confirmed that the agency is also cooperating with the investigation, The New York Times reported.
According to several reports and media outlets, including the New York Times, Perry was undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to treat depression and anxiety. His last session reportedly took place a little over a week before his untimely passing.
After an autopsy, the coroner determined that the amount of ketamine found in Perry's body at the time of his death “could not possibly” have been from the previous infusion therapy - according to the coroner, the level of ketamine in his body was similar to the amount used for general anesthesia in surgical procedures.
This determination likely led to the decision to investigate how and from whom Perry obtained the drug.
According to the coroner, drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine (a drug used to treat drug abuse and pain) also contributed to the actor's death.
The news of the actor's death came as a great shock to the entertainment industry and the acting community, especially his “Friends” co-stars and friends.
“Oh, this is a deep sadness... Having to say goodbye to our Matty was the craziest wave of emotion I have ever experienced,” friend Jennifer Aniston wrote on Instagram, along with a black-and-white photo of the two stars on the set of the hit TV show.
“We all experience loss at some point in our lives. Whether it is the loss of life or the loss of love. We can put ourselves in the midst of that grief to feel a moment of joy and gratitude for having loved someone so deeply. And we loved him deeply. He was part of our DNA. We were always six. We were a chosen family that forever changed the way we were and the path we were on.”
“It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye. The time we spent together was honestly one of my favorite times of my life,” co-star Matt LeBlanc wrote on Instagram. 'It was an honor to share the stage with you and call you my friend. You always make me smile when I think of you and I will never forget you. Never. Spread your wings and fly, brother. ...... I'm finally free. Love, and I owe you $20."
