Queen Elizabeth “felt uncomfortable” when Prince Charles walked Meghan Markle down the aisle.
Meghan Markle was walked down the aisle by King Charles at her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018. Harry's father served as a stand-in for Meghan's biological father, Thomas Markle, who was unable to attend the royal wedding. Harry later revealed that Prince Charles enjoyed supporting them by walking with the Duchess of Sussex. However, one royal expert suggested that Queen Elizabeth was not necessarily in favor of the decision.
In her new book, My Mother and I, royal expert Ingrid Sward reveals that the Queen was “uneasy” about Prince Charles' decision (via RadarOnline). According to Sward, “The Queen was not comfortable with the Prince of Wales standing in for Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, and was equally concerned that 96-year-old Prince Philip, who had undergone hip replacement surgery just five weeks earlier, would walk down the aisle without a cane .”
And in what seems to be a dig at Princess Meghan, Sward also claims that Prince Philip sees the Duchess of Sussex as “the new Wallis Simpson.” Simpson, of course, is the American divorcée from whom King Edward VIII abdicated the throne.
It is unclear why Queen Elizabeth took offense to Prince Charles' decision to let Princess Meghan walk down the aisle. It is also worth noting that the Duchess of Sussex walked the first half of the aisle herself, and that the royal wedding itself was generally regarded as quite grand.
Much has changed since Meghan and Harry tied the knot. The couple left the UK to start a new life in Montecito, California, where they are raising their two children (son Prince Archie and daughter Princess Lilibet). Meghan and Harry sadly remain at odds with their relatives. However, the Sussexes reportedly hope to repair their family relationship in the near future.
