Kerry Washington reunites with “Scandal” co-star Tony Goldwyn on the DNC stage.
On the final night of the Democratic National Convention, fans of the hit show “Scandal” enjoyed a special treat as President Fitzgerald “Fitz” Grant and the one and only Olivia Pope reunited on the United Center stage.
Kerry Washington hosted the fourth day of the DNC, the very night that Vice President Kamala Harris became the first black woman and the first South Asian woman to receive a major party's presidential nomination.
While addressing an enthusiastic crowd dressed in all-white in honor of the women's suffrage movement, Washington invoked her popular character, Pope, and then brought out a very special guest.
“I am the one standing on stage, but I am not the star of the story. You are the messengers. You are the messengers. You are fixers. I dare say you are Olivia Pope. You are the superheroes who will save this democracy.”
She then asked “someone” to bring her cell phone and record the historic moment (along with the crowd) for social media and use the footage as a call-to-action. [Scandal co-star Tony Goldwyn came on the scene.
Goldwyn brought his cell phone to Washington, and the two led the crowd in a rallying cry of “When we fight, we win,” which was filmed and later posted on Washington's Instagram account.
When it was all over, Goldwyn asked his co-star if he could stay on stage.
“No, go,” Washington replied. 'Tony Goldwyn, everyone! .
In a previous 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Washington revealed how the character of Scandal inspired him to increase his political participation and activism after the show ended.
“People wanted this fictional character to solve their problems. 'We live in a democracy. We have the power to make the most important changes, and yet we keep handing that power over to characters on television.”
Washington then founded the KW Foundation, an organization dedicated to emphasizing and better supporting civic engagement. In a particularly devious (read: genius) move, Washington posted what he claimed was a link with information about the allegedly scandalous film, but which was actually a link to register to vote.
In 2020, Washington was also one of several celebrities to speak at then-candidate and current President Joe Biden's virtual Democratic National Convention.
“When I was in the seventh or eighth grade, I memorized the preamble to our Constitution. The first 15 words of our Constitution are 'We the People of the United States, to form a more perfect Union.' We say 'more perfect' because our union is not without flaws.”
“When our Constitution was written, women could not vote. Blacks were considered three-fifths of a human being. But there is work to be done. No one is perfect. Nothing is perfect,” Washington continued. 'But it is our striving for justice, equality, and truth that sets us apart. Because we are fighting for the soul of this country. And for our lives. And now that fight is real.”
