The final night of the DNC was filled with women (and some men) in white coats - why?

On the fourth and final night of this year's Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Vice President Kamala Harris made history as the first Black and South Asian woman to receive a major party's nomination for president.

To no one's surprise, the official Democratic presidential nominee looked the part in a navy wool two-piece suit and matching pussy bow blouse custom designed by Chloe Creative Director Chemena Kamali.

But Harris was not the only one dressed for the occasion: as the vice president looked out over the crowd at Chicago's United Center and delivered the most important speech of her political career to date, she saw a sea of white.

According to the Associated Press, the Democratic delegation and convention attendees all (or most) coordinated their attire in white in honor of the women's suffrage movement that won white women the right to vote in 1920. (Some black women also won the right to vote at the same time, but it was not until 1965 that black women as a whole were granted that right)

As the Associated Press noted, the sea of white at this year's DNC culmination was not the first time women paid homage to feminists who had gone before them by evoking the color at a pivotal and historic political moment.
