Alex Rodriguez posts eyebrow-raising message after Jennifer Lopez files for divorce from Ben Affleck

Shortly after singer and actress Jennifer Lopez officially filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after only two years of marriage, her former fiancé, Alex Rodriguez, shared an undoubtedly cryptic message on Instagram.

On Tuesday, August 20, the same day Lopez filed the necessary paperwork to end their marriage, Rodriguez shared words on Instagram Stories that have since disappeared, People reports.

“I may be the one to decide which direction to go one way or the other,” the post read in simple letters. The words were credited to the former New York Yankees star, who played 22 seasons in the MLB.

Rodriguez and Lopez began dating in 2017 and became engaged two years later in 2019 in the Bahamas; by 2021 they called off their engagement, shortly after which reports emerged that Lopez had been texting Affleck months before Rodriguez broke up with him.

After Affleck and Lopez reunited and rekindled their early 1980s romance, Rodriguez was reportedly “shocked” that her former lover had moved on so quickly.

“A-Rod is shocked that J.Lo has moved on,” a source told E! News at the time. A-Rod is shocked that J.L. has moved on. He has been in touch with J.Lo to see her, but she has been very short with him."

Rodriguez's mysterious message (and timing of the post) raised some eyebrows, but a source familiar with the situation told People that the social media post had “nothing to do” with Lopez or her recent divorce.

Lopez filed the papers for her marriage to Affleck at their second wedding anniversary celebration in Georgia. According to reports, she filed without an attorney and there is no prenuptial agreement.

Some insiders claim that Affleck “showed no interest” in making the relationship work, while others claim that the actor continued to have problems with Lopez's level of fame.

Back in 2004, the two cited excessive media attention as the reason for the breakdown of their relationship and the end of their engagement. At one point, Affleck even said he did not want a “social media relationship” when the two reunited.

Other reports claimed that Lopez was simply “tired of being humiliated” by Affleck.

“Jennifer said she waited until their two-year anniversary because she was tired of being humiliated by Ben and wanted to stab him,” a source recently told the Daily Mail. 'But it didn't sting him. He was long broken up and deep down she knew it. He let her do this so she wouldn't look like a villain."
