Winona Ryder Says She “Checked Out” After 2001 Shoplifting Arrest
Winona Ryder has opened up about her arrest in the early 1980s and how she was treated in the media as a result.
On Thursday, August 29, the “Beetlejuice” star said in a new interview with Esquire magazine that she “checked out” of Hollywood and the entertainment industry following her December 2001 shoplifting arrest and the wave of negative press that followed.
In 2000, the actress was arrested and charged with stealing $5,500 worth of clothing from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills; in 2001, Ryder was found guilty of grand theft and shoplifting and sentenced to three years probation.
“I just checked out,” she told the magazine at the time, referring to how she dealt with public and media attacks. I think I just checked out.”
Ryder further said that her legal troubles “definitely had a huge impact” on her career.
