The moment when Prince Charles was called “Her Majesty” for the first time after Queen Elizabeth's death

On the two-year anniversary of the late Queen Elizabeth's passing, royal watchers, monarchy buffs and history buffs are revisiting the moment when her son, Prince Charles, was first called “Her Majesty.”

In January, Robert Hardman, biographer and contributor to the Daily Mail, published his latest book, Charles III New King. New Court: The Inside Story. In the book, Hardman recounts the moment when then-Prince Charles rushed to his mother's bedside only to learn, too late, that he was officially the new King of England.

Two years earlier, on September 8, 2022, Hardman wrote, “King Charles succeeded to the throne at the wheel.”

“More precisely, he had just turned off the B976 onto the drive behind Balmoral Manor and was driving through a part of the world dear and familiar to him.

According to Hardman, then Prince Charles visited his mother “earlier that day” at Balmoral Castle. He then drove back to his nearby home, Barker Hall, before he was due to return to his mother.

The author further notes that Sir Edward Young, private secretary to Prince Charles' late mother, called Prince Charles while he was driving. Prince Charles stopped his car to receive the call, at which time he was informed that his mother had died and that he was the King of England.

“History will record that 70 years later, on the afternoon of September 8, 2022, Prince Charles, (Queen Elizabeth's) son and heir, was called ‘Your Majesty’ for the first time while at the wheel of his car on an unnamed country road in Scotland.”

“Following in the footsteps of his late mother, he got into the car as both Prince of Wales and Duke of Rossey (his title while in Scotland),” he continued. Twenty minutes later he got out of the car as Charles II.”

Over the next two years, King Charles weathered a difficult period of monarchical change and recovery.

Not only does the royal family continue to navigate the tumultuous rift between the chief executive and Prince Harry, but King Charles continues to battle an unspecified cancer diagnosis while his daughter-in-law, Princess Kate, also faces ongoing cancer treatment.

In addition, the royal family has weathered an onslaught of rumors about Princess Kate, her health, her wellness, and her marriage to Prince William.
