Until the ailing Queen Elizabeth amusingly admonishes her groom after his last pony ride.
One of the most moving moments of Queen Elizabeth's funeral was when Emma, her beloved Fell pony, stood by the late monarch's coffin as it entered the gates of Windsor Castle.
Two years after Queen Elizabeth's death on September 8, 2022, the man who held Emma's reins reveals heartwarming moments from her royal days, including an episode highlighting her famous sense of humor.
Terry Pendry, Queen Elizabeth's stallion for over 25 years, shared his amazing royal journey with British broadcaster Giles Brandreth on his “Rosebud” podcast on Friday, September 6.
Despite being 96, Queen Elizabeth still riding the summer before her death, and Pendry revealed a hilarious encounter that occurred after “the very last day of riding” on July 18, 2022.
“I walked, I stood,” said the groom (who usually rode next to the late monarch on a different pony), adding that the queen told him, “I was a little bit nervous, but I was happy.
When Pendry asked what she meant, the queen replied, “Someone is walking next to me like this.”
He then took a royal photograph, despite her initial hesitation.
Pendry took the picture to put in Queen Elizabeth's scrapbook, but the next day she stopped by to see her trusted groom and Emma one last time.
“She just looked at me and said, ‘You were so rude to me yesterday,’” Pendry told the podcast.
“I said, ‘Your Majesty, I'm very sorry, what do you mean by rude?’” the groom recalled, adding that he was “deeply” sorry if he had been, and told Queen Elizabeth that “it would not have been intentional.”
When Pendry asked if that was what he meant, she replied, “Yes,” and finally, “You said my age!” He revealed, “I laughed”.
“That was her,” Pendry said. 'That was the last time I saw her.'
“I had a gut feeling that would be the last time I would see her,” Pendry said, noting that “she was getting lighter and lighter and weaker.”
At the funeral, Pendry had not told anyone of his plans to take Emma to see the procession.
However, he did make a special request of Angela Kelly, Queen Elizabeth's right-hand woman, asking her to place her beloved Hermes headscarf over her saddle.
At the end of the day, Pendry said, “It has been my small duty, honor, and privilege to serve the most wonderful woman in the world,” and added, “I wish I could throw away every medal on my chest.
