Twenty-seven years have passed since the People's Princess said her final farewell at Westminster Abbey in London. [On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana died in a tragic car accident before being laid to rest at her family's Althorpe mansion, where a funeral service attended by 2,000 guests was held.

The most heartbreaking part of the funeral was this envelope, addressed to “Mom,” containing a letter from Prince Harry, which was placed over Diana's casket.

In Prince Harry's memoir, Spare, his uncle, Earl Spencer (center), wrote that he was “appalled” that 12-year-old Harry and 15-year-old Prince William had to walk behind their mother's coffin.
