Angelina Jolie, 49, Says She Embraces Feeling “Like an Older Woman”
Actress and philanthropist Angelina Jolie opened up about her age and her feelings about approaching 50.
While attending the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, the 49-year-old Jolie discussed her portrayal of opera singer Maria Callas in her latest biopic, Maria, and how her taste in music has changed as the actress has aged and experienced her own personal pain and heartbreak, She told IndieWire.
“I'm 49. I feel like an older woman now, and I embrace that. When I was younger, there was music and sounds that matched what I was feeling: falling in love, being interested in this, whatever experience I was having."
“Nothing matches my feelings like opera. [Some songs] are so beautiful, so hopeful, so full of longing.” Opera is much bigger. It is bigger than we allow ourselves to feel in every moment."
[10Jolie also opened up about Callas and how her art was an exploration of her pain.
“Discovering, really listening to opera ...... It's a very open, human, complete feeling, the sum total of so many tragedies that she lived, acted, felt, and performed,” the actress explained. 'Most of us are in great pain. And so much of her art was an exploration of the depth of emotion that she was able to connect with because she carried so much.”
“So I don't pretend to fully understand her,” she added.
Appearing at this year's Venice International Film Festival, Jolie was somewhat candid about her pain and heartache, as if alluding to her ongoing divorce from actor Brad Pitt.
“There are a lot of things that I don't say in this room, but you probably know and assume,” the actress said at a press conference on Thursday, August 29, after being asked what she and Callas have most in common.
“I relate to the part of her that was very soft and didn't have a lot of room in the world to be as emotionally open as she really was,” Jolie continued, as People reported.
“I think I share her vulnerability more than anything else.”
In an interview with British Vogue in 2021, Jolie discussed her age and how she was actually looking forward to turning 50.
“I love getting older; I feel much more comfortable in my 40s than I did when I was younger. Maybe it's because my mom didn't live very long, so I think there's something about getting older for me that feels like a victory, not a sad thing."
[30“I'm looking forward to my 50s. I feel like I'll be in my element in my fifties.”
