Selena Gomez Says Singing for “Emilia Perez” Was “Therapy”
Selena Gomez did not attempt to sing as she usually does in her upcoming film, “Emilia Perez.”
On Sunday, Gomez participated in a Q&A about the film at the Telluride Film Festival with the rest of the Emilia Perez cast (including Zoe Saldaña, Carla Sofia Gascon, Adriana Paz, and Edgar Ramirez), where she discussed her character Jessi Del Monte's song “Mi She discussed the process of learning and recording “Camino.
“It was a little more rough sounding, but as I worked on the song more intimately with [singer/songwriter] Camille, it became almost like a ballad,” Gomez explained, according to People.
Gomez explained.”Recording the song was a chance for Gomez to experiment as an artist and push herself to sing as her character.
“I spent hours and hours in the studio and had a lot of fun and sang in a different way than I normally sing. I had to think in my mind, 'This is the limit I can reach in my character'”
.
In the end, she says, the process was “really therapeutic” and “turned out very beautifully.”
“Emilia Perez,” which opens in limited theaters on November 1 before premiering on Netflix on November 13, tells the story of a cartel leader who tries to fake her death.
The film may also mark the beginning of a career shift for Gomez. Gomez said in January that he plans to quit music after one more album.
“The music was a lot of fun, and the touring was really fun,” she said on an episode of the “Smartless” podcast (obtained by E! News). But at the same time I was doing a TV show (“The Wizards of Waverly Place”), which I really enjoyed, so I kept doing that. But as I got older, I started thinking, 'I need to find something I can settle down to.'”
