Season 3 of “Kyojo Creature”: Everything We Know
Contains spoilers for the conclusion of Season 2 of “KYOSEONG CREATURE” On September 27, 2024, Netflix's hit thriller K-drama “KYOSEONG CREATURE” returned for a second season. Season 2, with seven episodes, depicted how a villain thought to have been defeated in World War II has survived to the present day, and how humans are still infected by a mysterious creature known as the “Najin.” Private detective Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee) is eventually reunited with Jang Tae-sang (Park So-jung) to fight a new generation of villains led by ruthless killer Seung-jo (Bae Hyun-sung).
Many fans (myself included) thought that season 2 would conclude the show's plot, but a surprising cliffhanger suggests that this historical K-drama may return for more pulse-pounding episodes. Here's everything we know so far about the possibility of a “Kyojo Creature” Season 3.
As of September 30, neither Netflix nor director Chung Dong-woong have made any statements suggesting a Season 3 renewal for “Gyeongseong Creature”. As with other Netflix shows, it is likely that the streaming giant is waiting for viewership numbers to see if they will allow another season. In that case, it would be advantageous for fans. According to the Korea Times, Season 2 “surged to No. 3 in the world TV show rankings just two days after its release.”
“Gyeongseong Creature” had a unique release schedule for a Netflix K-drama. Season 1 consisted of two parts, with the first half premiering on December 22, 2023 and the second half on January 5, 2024, while Season 2 was released later that year in September 2024. The two productions were filmed simultaneously, making “Gyeongseong” a rare drama that was set to premiere multiple seasons.
Nothing has been announced about plans for Season 3, so its revival could be a year or two to three years or more (like The Squid Game and Sweet Home). We hope to see its revival as soon as possible.
Since there will not be a major time jump in Season 3 (more on that later), most of the main cast members from Season 2 are expected to return, including Park Seo-jung (Jang Tae-sang/Ho Jae), Han So-hee (Yoon Chae-ok), Bae Hyun-sung (Sunjo), Lee Moo-seon ( Inspector Black), Ho Joon-seok (Kwon Young-gil), Lee Sung-wook (Detective Yoo Myung-joon), Han Dong-hee (Detective Noh Ji-su), and Park Hae-jin (Ho-jae's antenna informant).
For those who missed the post-credits scene, Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 ends with the threat of everyday citizens of Seoul being infected by Najin after Sunjo places the creature in countless crates of bottled water. As seen in the case of Subject No. 71/Antenna Harmonie's grandson, this is horrifying and will lead to countless deaths. Season 3 may begin with a dramatic increase in the death toll in Seoul as the newly infected humans wreak havoc.
In that case, how will Chae-ok and Tae-sang be drawn back into the fray? By the end of Season 2, Chae-ok has left her mother, Na-jin, who died temporarily in a fish tank, and is living a normal human life. She lives with her antenatal halmoni, and Tae-sang/Hojae seems to be protecting her from afar. (It is not yet entirely clear if Tae-sang planned to remove Najin again and live a human life with Chae-ok.) Chae-ok has neither powers nor memory at the start of Season 3, but is able to regain either after accidentally drinking the water that infected Najin.
Finally, there is the question of what will ultimately bring down Sunjo, the entire star biotechnology, and the entire najin threat. Many choices are possible here, based on why Sunjo decided to release the najin to the public in the first place. (My hypothesis is that he wants to weed out the weak and create a world of only black people. ) No matter what the creative team explores, there is no doubt that Season 3 will be another action-packed production.
